SAN MARCOS, Texas – A three-run homer by senior August Ramirez would be all the scoring Texas State got on Saturday in a 5-3 loss to Troy at Bobcat Ballpark. Prior to the game, the team recognized 16 of its seniors that are playing their final collegiate games in San Marcos this weekend.
With the result, TXST is now 25-26 on the season and 11-15 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Trojans improved to 35-17 overall and 17-9 in league play.
Ramirez's home run was the ninth of his season and 23rd of his career to move him into a tie for 12 in program history. Overall, the Helotes, Texas native was 3-for-4 at the plate with two singles.
Alec Patino was the only other TXST batter with multiple hits. The senior first baseman went the other way for two doubles that saw both nearly leave the yard.
On the rubber, Jonthan Martinez (2-3) surrendered three runs on three walks and one hit while recording just one out. Luke Lyon (8-2) struck out five in 6.1 innings while giving up three runs on six hits to pick up the win. Jay Dill threw two scoreless frames with three punch outs to earn his second save of the season.
Drayton Brown threw five scoreless innings with two strikeouts to start the game. Setting a career-high with three strikeouts in two innings of relief was Cameron O'Banan.
In the second, Aaron Lugo singled just under the third baseman's glove and Daylan Pena was hit by a 3-2 offering. Ramirez followed by sending a 0-1 offering over the right centerfield wall to give the Bobcats the early advantage.
Texas State would twice have opportunities to increase its advantage with Chase Mora and Patino hitting doubles to lead off the third and fifth innings, respectively. Mora would get thrown out trying to advance on a fly out while Patino got stranded on third.
In the top of the sixth, Troy was able to load the bases with one out. Austin Eaton got Tremayne Cobb, Jr. to strikeout for the second out of the frame. A grounder hit down the third baseline by Kyle Mock was stabbed by Lugo, who then made an incredible throw to first to retire the Trojan designated hitter to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
Martinez was one strike away from leaving two Troy runners on base in the seventh but Evan Kavanagh singled back up the middle to drive in the first run of the weekend for the Trojans. Bobcat pitchers would struggle to find the strike zone as four consecutive batters were walked and another was hit by a pitch that brought in four more runs to put the visitors up 5-3.
Ramirez singled to right with one out in the ninth and lifted for pinch runner Samson Pugh. However, the next two batters struck out to end the game and end TXST's chances of a comeback.
Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
