SAN MARCOS, Texas – In a tightly contested Sun Belt Conference match, Texas State and Troy battled to the final singles match before falling to the Trojans, 4-3, on Friday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
The match came down to the final singles contest on court two between Texas State's
Callie Creath and Troy's Hagar Ramadan-Amin. Despite Creath evening both sets at 5-5, Ramadan-Amin took the match in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 and secured the 4-3 victory over the Bobcats (9-6, 3-4 Sun Belt).
"We knew it was going to be a battle and I thought the girls fought hard," said Texas State head coach
Kendall Brooks. "Some missed opportunities in doubles, but we rebounded well on some of the courts in singles. We put ourselves in position to have a chance to win with the last match on, but it just didn't go our way today."
The Bobcats dropped the doubles point to begin the match and found themselves down 3-1 to the Trojans in singles play. Texas State did not roll over and soon evened the match 3-3, due to an incredible come-from-behind victory from
Emily Niers on court three. Niers earned her first singles victory in conference play, when she won her match 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2.
Doubles
Troy secured the doubles point after winning matches on courts two and three. On court No. 2,
Emma Carr and
Emily Niers fell 6-4 against Troy's Krsitina Kukaras and Emilia Namyslo.
The Trojans pair of Leena Metwally and Ramadan-Amin won the doubles point by defeating
Mae McCutcheon and
Andrea Pineda 6-3. This was the first time McCutcheon and Pineda had been partners and marked Pineda's first doubles loss of the season.
Sofia Fortuno and
Maria Lora were on court one for the Bobcats and their matchup went unfinished. Fortuno and Lora were up 6-5 versus Troy's number one doubles pair.
Singles
On court No. 1
Kiana Graham quickly evened the match 1-1 after winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. This was Graham's second conference win in straight sets and marked the second time in her career she had not given up a point to her opponent in a singles match.
Troy got out to a 3-1 lead after winning matches on courts five and six. Pineda fell 6-2, 6-1 on court five and suffered her fourth loss in singles play to move her season record to 10-4.
Lora was featured on court six and dropped her match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
The comeback began for the Bobcats on court four, when Fortuno secured her ninth singles win on the season and defeated Troy's Valeriia Avdeeva in straight set's 7-6 (7), 6-1.
Niers evened the match 3-3 on court three. She dropped her first set 3-6 and after finding herself down in the second set, she fought back to win 7-6 (7) and forced the match into set three. In the third set Niers secured a 6-2 victory and evened the match at 3-3.
In the longest match of the day, Creath gave it her all but came up short in both sets against Troy's Ramadan-Amin. Creath moves to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
