MONROE, La. – Down by a run heading to the ninth, Texas State scored three times in the final frame that saw
Chris Bernal drive in the go-ahead runs to take the series finale 13-11 over ULM at Lou St. Amant Field on Sunday.
Â
The win sees the Bobcats improve to 18-19 overall and 6-9 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Warhawks drop to 17-18 on the year and 5-10 in league play.
Â
Bernal came on as a defensive replacement behind the plate in the eighth and came through at the plate a frame later with a two RBI single.
Rashawn Galloway added a pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth as well that tied the contest.
Â
Both
Chase Mora and
Daylan Pena went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored twice. Mora drove in four runs as he hit a double and triple. For Pena, he extended his reached base streak to 32 games to tie for the third longest in program history with Garrett Mattladge's 2013 mark.
Â
Also finishing with two base knocks was
Kameron Weil. Scoring twice was
Aaron Lugo and
Cade Manning while
Ian Collier hit a two-run homer.
Â
Picking up the win was
Jonathan Martinez (2-2) as he worked 1.2 scoreless innings with one strikeout. Earning his second save of the season was
Otto Wofford after throwing a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts. Carson Orton (3-2) gave up two runs on one hit and three walks to take the loss.
Â
Drayton Brown started and went 3.1 innings with two strikeouts but gave up seven hits and five runs.
Cameron Bush struck out four over three innings out of the bullpen.
Â
The scoring started for TXST in the first with Pena hitting a bloop single down the right field line to bring home Weil. The second run of the frame came on a sacrifice fly by
Alec Patino. After
Cade Manning was plunked to load the bases, Mora hit a bases clearing triple down the right line. He would come home on
Ian Collier's two-run home run to cap off a seven-run frame.
Â
ULM threatened in the bottom of the inning as it loaded the bases with two singles and a walk with two outs. Brown was able to get Ian Montz looking for a strikeout to escape unscathed.
Â
The Warhawks would get on the board in the second with three runs with an assist to a Bobcat error.
Â
Doubles by Mora and Weil would bring home a run apiece as the Bobcats' increased their advantage to 9-3 in the third.
Â
ULM cut into the lead with a five-run fourth behind six hits with half of them not leaving the infield. The hosts would tie the game at 9-9 in the sixth.
Â
Pena worked a walk to start the seventh. He would then advance to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout. A wild pitch would allow the junior to score to put Texas State back in front.
Â
The lead would be short-lived as the Warhawks scored twice in the bottom of the inning on just one hit and a Bobcat error.
Â
A 0-1 pitch was sent back up the middle by Pena to start off the ninth with a single and he would be lifted for pinch runner
Cameron O'Banan. After a four-pitch walk issued to Lugo, Patino hit a deep fly out to left center that allowed both runners to move into scoring position.
Â
Galloway hit a 2-2 pitch to center to drive in the O'Banan to tie the game. After a strikeout, Mora was intentionally walked to bring Bernal to the plate. The sophomore laced a 1-2 pitch through the hole on the left side to plate two runs and put TXST back in front 13-11.
Â
Wofford retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth via a strikeout and groundout. After hitting a batter, the senior right-hander got Shawn Weatherbee swinging for a punch out to salvage the series for the Bobcats.
Â
Next up for Texas State is a game on Tuesday in San Antonio against Incarnate Word. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
