AUSTIN, Texas – For the first time since 2001 and only the third in program history, Texas State won the season series over Texas following a 7-3 victory at UFCU Disch-Falk Field Wednesday night. It was also the Bobcats' third consecutive win in Austin over the Longhorns since winning four straight meetings from 2000-02.
Â
With the win, TXST is now 17-17 on the season while UT drops to 20-14.
Â
Earning the win was
Taylor Seay (2-0) after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings of relief with one strikeout. Easton Tumis (3-1) took the loss as he surrendered three runs on three walks and two hits over 3.1 innings.
Â
Cameron Bush started and threw 2.2 scoreless frames with three strikeouts.
Jonathan Martinez punched out two in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen while both
Calen Graham and
Sam Hall tossed one inning without allowing a run.
Â
Both
Ethan Farris and
Alex Gonzales finished with two hits on the night. They each hit a double while Gonzales smacked the first home run of his collegiate career and drove in three runs. Finishing with one base knock was
Chase Mora, who plated two runs, and
August Ramirez.
Â
It was a scoreless game until the top of the fourth. With one out, back-to-back walks were issued to
Aaron Lugo and
Rashawn Galloway, respectively, and Farris singled through the left side to load the bases.
Alec Patino showed patience at the plate and drew a walk to bring home Lugo.
Â
A bloop single to center off the bat of Mora plated two more runs. After a pitching change, Gonzales sent the first pitch he saw the opposite way and just over the right field wall for a three-run home run and the first long ball of his collegiate career to increase the lead to 6-0.
Â
The Longhorns would get on the scoreboard in the fifth after a wild pitch. A double would plate their second run of the game to cut TXST's advantage to four.
Â
Patino started off the sixth by being walked. Gonzales would hit a double just inside the third base bag to put both he and Patino in scoring position. After a pitching change,
Kameron Weil hit a fly out to left that was deep enough to bring home the senior first baseman to make it 7-2 Bobcat lead.
Â
A solo homer by Jared Thomas in the seventh again made it a four-run contest. That would be the final run of the game by either team.
Â
Texas State is back on the road for Sun Belt Conference play with a series at ULM that starts on Friday with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
