SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team began a stretch of nine of the next 10 games at home with a 6-5 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
Â
"I thought we played pretty horrible to be honest with you. Allowed 10 walks, and you are not going to beat a lot of teams doing that, only had six hits and hit a lot of fly balls. That is exactly what we did as a coaching staff to prep the guys not to happen, exactly happened," said head coach
Steven Trout. "It doesn't matter who you play, and Corpus is playing some pretty good baseball right now, we didn't show up to play tonight. We will get that fixed over the next few games."
Â
With the result, the Bobcats fell to 7-5 while the Islanders are now 7-8.
Â
Held to six hits on the night, two came off the bat of
Chase Mora and he also drove in three runs. Plating a run apiece was
Ryne Farber and
Kameron Weil.
Â
Taking the loss on the mound was
Jack Stroud (1-2) after he gave up the final two runs of the game and got two outs. David Stuart (1-0) threw a scoreless inning of relief to claim the win and Maddox Thornton earned his third save of the season after he tossed the final 1.1 innings.
Â
A total of 10 Bobcat pitchers saw action Tuesday night.
Calen Graham went the longest at 2.1 innings. The trio of
Jonathan Martinez,
Taylor Seay and
Matthew Tippie all tossed one scoreless inning. Martinez's one frame of work saw him strikeout the side.
Â
TAMUCC were able to load the bases in both the first and second innings but were only able to push one run across. Logan Vaughn made it a 2-0 lead as he led off the third with a solo home run.
Â
With two outs in the bottom of the frame, Weil laid down a bunt for an infield single. Ryen Farber then sent a 3-1 offering that hit off the right centerfield wall and he hustled around for his first career triple to cut the deficit in half. After
Alec Patino was plunked, Mora singled past the third baseman to tie the game.
Â
The Islanders retook the lead in the fifth with a run and went ahead 4-2 with another tally in the sixth.
Â
Aaron Lugo was hit by a pitch to start off the bottom of the seventh and
Cameron Thompson singled to center. After a deep fly out allowed Lugo to tag and move to third to put runners on the corners, Weil put down another bunt to bring home Lugo to make it a one-run contest.
Â
Farber was intentionally walked and Patino drew a free pass to load the bases. A 2-1 offering to Mora was laced through the left side to bring in two runs and put Texas State in front 5-4.
Â
The lead would be short lived as Vaughn singled to right center in the eighth to plate two runs to again give the Islanders the lead.
Â
A walk to Lugo and Pena was plunked to put two on with two out in the bottom of the ninth. However, Thronton induced a fly out to right center to end the game and the Bobcats' hopes of a comeback.
Â
Next up for TXST is a three-game series at home against former Southland Conference rival Sam Houston. The first pitch of the series opener on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
