BOONE, N.C. – In its second top-ranked Sun Belt matchup of the week, Texas State fell to App State 4-1. This marked the first time this season that Texas State (9-5, 3-3 Sun Belt) has suffered back-to-back losses on the road.
"It was pretty tough conditions today, very windy, and we just weren't tough enough," said Texas State head coach
Kendall Brooks. "Fought and competed but came up short. This one is disappointing, but we have to bounce back and try to finish strong at home the next two weeks."
The Bobcats dropped the doubles point to begin the match against App State (11-7, 5-2 Sun Belt) and despite quickly regaining the point in singles play, the Bobcats were unable to hold off the Mountaineers.
Doubles
App State won the first doubles match on court two when it defeated Texas State's
Mae McCutcheon and
Jadeh Chan 6-1.
Sofia Fortuno and
Maria Lora evened the doubles portion for the Bobcats with a 7-5 win on court one. Fortuno and Lora improved to 8-4 overall and 3-3 in Sun Belt play as a doubles pair.
The doubles point came down to the final match on court three between Texas State's
Emma Carr and
Emily Niers and App State's Brooke Gruber and Savannah Dada-Mascoll. Gruber and Dada-Mascoll won the match in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7) to earn the doubles point for the Mountaineers.
Singles
Andrea Pineda (10-3, 4-2 Sun Belt) became the first Bobcat to reach double-digit singles wins on the season when on court five, Pineda defeated App State's Gruber in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to even the match at 1-1.
App State went on to win three straight singles matches to secure the victory. On court four, Fortuno fell in straight sets to the Mountaineers' Naledi Manyube 6-3, 6-3. Niers was featured on court three for the Bobcats and was defeated in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, which gave App State a 3-1 lead.
The Mountaineers secured the match point on court one in a matchup that featured Texas State's
Kiana Graham and App State's Dada-Mascoll. Dada-Mascoll improved to 6-0 in conference play when she defeated Graham in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Lora's match on court six went unfinished, after App State secured the match point. Lora had won the first set 7-5 and was leading in the second set 4-3.
Callie Creath's match was headed into the third set when it went unfinished. Creath had won the first set 6-4 and dropped the second set 6-1.

After four straight matches on the road, the Bobcats will be back at home next week to face Troy on Friday, April 5 and Georgia State on Sunday, April 7. Friday's match will begin at 11 am, while Sunday's match is set to start at 10 am.
