MOBILE, Alabama – Texas State softball won 13-3 in record-setting fashion.
Sara Vanderford hit her 165
th and 166
th career RBI to open the scoring, breaking the Texas State all-time career RBI record.
Vanderford had two home runs, three hits and seven RBI in the game, leading the team to the 13-3 win.
Ciara Trahan and
JJ Smith also had multi-hit games that helped the Bobcats to the win.
The Bobcats are now 29-7 on the season and 7-1 in conference play with series wins in all three of its conference series so far this season.
Maddy Azua started in the circle and got the win, the 6
th of her career. She pitched 3.2 innings before
Jessica Mullins closed the game out for her third save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Sara Vanderford started the scoring for the Bobcats, and broke Texas State history in the process. She hit a single to right field to bring home two RBI, the 165
th and 166
th of her career. These two RBI broke the all-time career record at Texas State, with Vanderford passing Ariel Ortiz in the statistic. She put the Bobcats up 2-0 to start the game.
Maddy Azua started in the circle for the Bobcats, striking out one batter in the first inning. She kept the Jaguars off the board in the first.
Karmyn Bass started the slew of hits that found the Bobcats up 4-0 after two innings. She singled to the pitcher, advancing on
Kamden Hutton's sac-bunt.
Ciara Trahan would score Hutton on an RBI single.
Piper Randolph followed that up with an RBI single of her own.
The Jaguars were able to pull back a run in the bottom of the 3
rd off an RBI single.
JJ Smith was walked in the 4
th to start off the inning.
Kamden Hutton would hit her first-career double to left center to score Laughlin, who pinch ran for Smith. The 'Cats held a 5-1 lead headed to the bottom of the 4
th.
South Alabama pulled back two runs in the 4
th, forcing head coach
Ricci Woodard to make a pitching change to bring on
Jessica Mullins. She'd get out of the inning with no more runs scored.
Vanderford tacked on two more RBI to her day with a two-run homer up the middle to give the Bobcats the 7-3 lead. Mullins closed the inning with two strikeouts.
Neither side found any runs in the sixth, but the Bobcats floodgates opened in the top of the 7
th. Trahan got her third hit of the day for two RBI.
Sydney Harvey was walked on her at-bat.
Hannah Earls scored on a wild pitch.
On her final at-bat of the night, Vanderford hit her second home run of the game. She hit the bomb to left field, good for three RBI. She gave the Bobcats the final runs on the 13-3 night.
The Bobcats are now 29-7 on the season and 7-1 in conference play.
The Bobcats will look for the series sweep tomorrow at 1 pm in the finale with the Jaguars. The Bobcats will then return home for a midweek game with Baylor on Wednesday, April 3 at 6 pm.
