HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA – In a back-and-forth match that lasted six hours and came down to the final sets on courts five and six,
Andrea Pineda secured the victory for the Bobcats on court five and helped Texas State tennis earn its first victory in program history over James Madison 4-2.
"An absolutely massive win for our program," said Texas State women's tennis head coach
Kendall Brooks. "I have never seen a team fight so hard for anything before. From the very first point to the very last, they gave it their all and earned the win. Proud of them is an understatement, and one of the most fun matches I've been a part of. Pumped to see what else we can do."
The Bobcats (9-3, 3-1 Sun Belt) got out to an early lead by winning the doubles point. JMU (6-7 2-2 Sun Belt) did not go away easily and tied the match 1-1 with a win on No. 1. After the two sides traded points,
Sofia Fortuno gave the Bobcats a 3-2 lead with a win on court four and
Andrea Pineda closed out the match by winning her matchup on court five 7-6 (7), 4-6, 6-3.
Texas State is off to its best start in conference play since the 2017 season, and already have more overall wins than it had all of last year.
Doubles
The Bobcats quickly earned the doubles point after winning matches on court one and court two. Fortuno and
Maria Lora earned their first doubles win on court one after defeating JMU's Daria Munteanu and Ines Oliveira 6-3. Fortuno and Lora now have seven wins as a double pair on the season.
On court two,
Mae McCutcheon and
Jadeh Chan got out to an early lead and did not look back as they went on to win 6-2. McCutcheon and Chan secured the doubles point for the Bobcats to get them out to an early lead.
Emma Carr and
Emily Niers' match on court three went unfinished after the Bobcats had secured the wins needed to gain the doubles point.
Singles
JMU evened the score after winning the first singles match on court one.
Kiana Graham fell 6-3, 6-4 to the Dukes' Daria Munteanu, who is now 3-1 in conference play.
On court two
Callie Creath helped the Bobcats regain the lead after winning her match in three sets. Creath dropped the first set 7-6 (7) but battled back to win the last two sets 6-4, 6-4. Creath is tied for the most singles wins on the team with nine on the year and is undefeated against conference foes.
The Dukes tied the match again with a win on court three. Texas State's
Emily Niers won the first set, but dropped the last two sets to Cate Broerman 5-7, 6-7 (7).
Sofia Fortuno gave the Bobcats a 3-2 lead after winning in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. Fortuno secured her eighth singles win on the year and moved to a 3-1 record in conference.
Pineda's match deciding victory on court five against Reka Matko was her ninth singles victory in her last 10 matches.
Maria Lora's match on court six went unfinished after Pineda earned the final point for the Bobcats. Lora was up in the third set 5-4 after dropping the first set 7-6 (7) and winning the second set 6-1.
