SAN MARCOS, Texas – After being named the Sun Belt Conference's Player of the Week just hours earlier, Daylan Pena continued his hot streak at the plate with two grand slams in helping Texas State defeat I-35 rival UTSA 14-13 Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Bobcats improved to 12-9 on the season while the Roadrunners dropped to 10-11.
Pena's eight RBI are the most this season by a Bobcat and second highest by a player in the Sun Belt. Over his last five games, the junior has gone 10-for-18 (.556) with five homers and 17 RBI.
Rashawn Galloway was the only other TXST player with multiple hits as he finished with two. The sophomore tallied a double and solo home run.
The foursome of Alex Gonzales, Aaron Lugo, Davis Powell and Kameron Weil all drew two walks. Weil scored three times and both Gonzales and Lugo scored twice apiece. Driving in two runs apiece were Chase Mora and Powell.
Picking up the win on the rubber was Rhett McCaffety (1-0) after he threw two scoreless innings of one-hit ball and struck out three. Otto Wofford retired the final two batters of the game to earn his first save of the season and his career. Taking the loss was Braylon Owens after he allowed six runs on four hits and free passes while retiring just one batter.
Also having a strong outing on the mound was Tony Robie, who went 2.1 innings with just one run surrendered on two base knocks. Four of the five batters that Cameron Bush retired were via a punch out.
UTSA struck first with four runs in the top of the first behind two singles, two walks, two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the frame, Alec Patino put the Bobcats on the scoreboard with an RBI single through the right side. Mora would drive in another run following a pitching change to cut the deficit in half.
Following a walk to Lugo that loaded the bases, Pena sent a 2-1 pitch over the left centerfield wall for his first grand slam of the game. Galloway smashed his first round tripper of the season two batters later. Later in the inning, Powell hit a slow chopper to the right side that was fielded by the pitcher. The senior shortstop beat Owens to first base for a single that saw both Gonzales and Weil score on the infield hit to make it a 9-4 TXST lead.
The Roadrunners responded with four runs in the second behind three home runs.
In the bottom of the third, three consecutive walks were issued to Texas State batters. Mora would later hit a fly out to left field that was deep enough for Gonzales to score. Following a walk to Lugo, Pena crushed a 2-0 pitch to left center for his second grand slam of the night. It would also be the final runs that the Bobcats scored as they took a 14-8 advantage.
UTSA would score a run in the next half inning for the last run until the eighth. The visitors would plate two in that frame to make it a three-run contest.
Diego Diaz made it a one-run game when he hit a two-run homer to right center in the ninth. The next two batters would reach after being plunked and on a walk. Wofford came on an induced a fly out to right and then a ground out to Lugo to wrap up the contest.
Next up for the Bobcats is a weekend series at James Madison that begins at 3 p.m. CT on Friday.
