SAN MARCOS, Texas – Head Coach
Ricci Woodard won her 800
th career win in a late-game rally from the Bobcats on Friday night. The 4-3 win over Kennesaw State marked the 24 year head coach's 800
th win, with all 800 coming at Texas State.
The Bobcats had four runs on seven hits in the come-from-behind win on Friday night. Three of the runs came off the bat of
Piper Randolph, who hit her first home run of the season, second of her career.
Rounding out the scoring was an RBI double from Bass, who helped
Anna Jones score the game winning run in the bottom of the 6
th.
The Bobcats continue the Texas State tournament tomorrow with two games, one against Southern Illinois at 2:30 and one with Creighton at 4:45.
From Texas State head coach Ricci Woodard
"The relationships and the people I get to do this with every day [are the best part]. If you win 800 games you've been doing it a long time and you've had a lot of people who have helped with that. I love the people that I get to go to work with every day. [Texas State] is just a fun place to be. Getting to play in front of Bobcat nation every day, it doesn't get much better than that."
From Center Fielder Piper Randolph
"I think that added a little bit to the game that we weren't just fighting to get a win, but we were fighting for Coach Woodard. We wanted to help her get her 800
th win and I think that helped us tonight."
How it Happened
It was a chess match early on between Bobcat pitcher
Analisa Soliz and Owl pitcher Melanie Bennett. With three scoreless innings and each pitcher only giving up one hit, it was a good showing from both sides field players to keep runs off the scoreboard.
In the top of the 4
th the Owls finally broke the deadlock. With one on base,
Presley Glende came on for Soliz. To follow that up, the Owls got a two run homerun that gave them the 2-0 lead in the fourth.
The Bobcats didn't score in the fourth or the fifth and it was looking tough for the 'Cats as the Owls tacked on a third run, unearned off an error by
JJ Smith at first base.
Jessica Mullins made her 2024 season debut, subbing in for Glende in the top of the 6
th. With that sub, the Bobcats have now used six different pitchers in three games so far this year, giving up just seven hits.
In the bottom of the 6
th, up to bat came Randolph. Earls got on base from a fielder's choice to get Harvey out at second, and Trahan laid a bunt down to get on base. With two on the field, Randolph cranked a home run to left center for a game-tying 3 RBI homer.
From there, Jones got herself on base from a single up the middle and Bass' double to left center allowed her to score the winning run. After going into the sixth inning scoreless, the Bobcats came out of it on top 4-3.
Mullins struck out one in the top of the seventh and ground out another before
Ciara Trahan made the diving catch in foul territory to get a foul out and finish the game with the Bobcats up 4-3.
