SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State women's tennis defeated Sam Houston 4-3 on Saturday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex to secure its second consecutive win.
Despite dropping the doubles point, the Bobcats (2-2) regrouped in singles where they won four of the six singles points and secured the victory over undefeated Sam Houston.
"So proud of the girls for the way they fought today," said Texas State head coach Kendall Brooks. "We knew it was going to be a battle and everybody really did their job at the highest level. We had to overcome some adversity, and I thought we handled that well. To come back after two team losses and get two wins is huge for us going forward. Excited to go on the road next week."
Doubles
The Bobcats dropped two of the three doubles sets, allowing Sam Houston to take an early lead in the match. On the second court, the pair of Sofia Fortuno and Maria Lora secured their second doubles victory of the season. They were matched up against Sam Houston's India Fenieys and Aaliyah Hohmann, who were unbeaten in doubles coming into the match. Fortuno and Lora made quick work of their opponents, winning the set 6-1.
The Bobcats lost the two doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 3 by a score of 6-4.
Singles
Quickly bouncing back from her doubles loss at No. 1, Emily Niers secured the first singles point for Texas State by beating Sahithi Vutukuru in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 on the third court.
On the sixth court, Lora won her match in straight sets as well, winning 6-3, 6-2. Lora now has back-to-back singles wins and both of those victories have been in straight sets.
After not playing singles against UIW, Kiana Graham was back on the first court and earned the Bobcats their third singles point. After losing the first set 6-2, Graham turned it around by winning the second and third sets 6-1, 6-1. Graham was matched up against Megan Bassson, who was 3-0 in singles coming into the match.
The match clinching point came from Andrea Pineda. Pineda won the first set 6-4 and despite losing the second set 6-1, she captured the third set 6-4. It was Pineda's third straight singles win.
Fortuno on the fourth court, came up short against her opponent and dropped her sets 7-5, 6-3.
Creath was featured on the second court, and was up against Paula Cerda, who was undefeated in singles coming into the match. Creath won the first set 6-4 but fell short in the second and third sets 6-3, 6-3.

Texas State heads to Stephenville, Texas next week where they will face off against Oral Roberts on February 10 and Tarleton State on February 11.
