Love Records Double-Double in First-Ever Win over Golden Eagles

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior Brandon Love recorded his fourth double-double of the season as Texas State (9-14, 3-8 Sun Belt) completed a weekend sweep with a 60-55 win over Southern Miss (12-11, 6-5 Sun Belt). The Houston native finished with 15 points and matched his career-high of 14 rebounds.

Coming off the bench, Jordan Mason netted 14 points including going 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Both he and Kaden Gumbs finished the afternoon with four steals apiece to tie and set a new career best, respectively. Gumbs contributed five rebounds and two assists as well.

Also reaching double-figures was Davion Sykes with 12 points as he knocked down 6-of-12 attempts from the field. The sophomore also grabbed eight rebounds, blocked two shots and recorded one steal.

The Golden Eagles held the advantage for most of the opening half and held a lead as much as four times. Defensively, the Bobcats were able to hold the visitors to just 2-for-16 from the field over the last 11:31 of the period. They would use two 6-0 runs, including one to end the period, to take a 31-24 advantage into halftime.

Love had a dominating opening 20 minutes as he nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and rebounds. Sykes added eight points as TXST totaled 26 of its first half points in the paint.

The Bobcats would stretch their advantage to 37-26 just over three minutes into the second half on a jumper by Sykes. It would be their largest lead of the game.

USM went on a 10-2 run over a 4:25 span to tie the score at 46-46 when Cobie Montgomery knocked down a three-pointer. Love and Mason followed with buckets to stretch the advantage back to four.

A 6-2 scoring stretch for the Eagles with all the points being scored by Austin Crowley again tied the game, this time at 54-54 with 1:59 left in the game.

Mason hit a pull-up jumper from the left elbow to put the Bobcats in front for good. Both he and Gumbs would make two free throws attempts apiece to seal the game.

Next up for TXST is a meeting with Sun Belt Conference leaders App State on Wednesday in Strahan Arena with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
