Softball Splits Day Two of TXST Tournament

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball split its day on Friday with a 5-2 loss to Tula to start the day, but an 8-0 run-rule victory over Northern Colorado to end the day. With the split day the Bobcats now have a 7-2 record on the season.

In the 8-0 run-rule win, the 'Cats saw five different members of its lineup get hits to score five different runners for the runs. That, paired with a one-hit and four strikeout day from freshman pitcher Maddy Azua sealed the victory for the Bobcats.

Against Tulsa it was a 3-run top of the second inning for the visitors that gave them a lead for most of the game. The Bobcats were able to pull two back, but with three defensive errors, Tulsa was able to win the game.

The Bobcats continue play tomorrow in the TXST Tournament and will open the day against Texas Tech at 12:15 and a rematch with Tulsa at 2:30.

From Texas State head coach Ricci Woodard
"I don't think we did anything real well in the first game. We didn't didn't pitch great, we didn't defend great. They outplayed us. I'm not sure they're the better team, but they outplayed us so they won the ball game. It's pretty simple, the team that plays the best is going to win and we did not play the best the first game. But I thought we did a much better job in the second game in all categories."

From Pitcher Maddy Azua
"[Bouncing back from my last start] felt really good knowing I can bounce back from anything. And having, [Sara Vanderford] yelling in my ear all the time definitely helps. It feels great [to get the win].

From 3rd Baseman Sara Vanderford
"Northern Colorado is probably a team we should beat. If we're going to beat a team like Tulsa, we're going to have to bounce back tomorrow and it's going to take a completely different approach. I think we have to show up better and get on it from the jump and not let them be more aggressive than we are.

Game Summaries
Defensive Errors Doom Bobcats in 5-2 Loss
Karsen Pierce started off in the circle for the Bobcats and gave up just one hit in the opening inning. Despite hitting a batter and giving up a single, she was able to get out of the inning with no runs on the board.

The 'Cats were held hitless in the opening inning and gave Pierce some work to do in the top of the 2nd. After back-to-back errors saw two get on base, the Bobcats were able to turn a double play for the first two outs. After that, though, a walk and back-to-back hits from Tulsa gave them a 3-0 run after two innings.

Texas State pulled back two runs in the 2nd, though. One came off an RBI single from JJ Smith to score Vanderford, the next was an RBI double from Megan Kelnar to score Smith. Sydney Harvey was able to get on base with a hit of her own, but a Hannah Earls strikeout ended the inning before she could equalize the score.

The Bobcats lone runs came in the 2nd inning. Tulsa was able to tack two more on to their tally, one in the 6th off an RBI double, and one in the seventh on a wild pitch. After seven innings the Bobcats fell 5-2.

Bobcats Run-Rule Northern Colorado
Freshman pitcher Maddy Azua started on the mound for the Bobcats where she retired the first 12 batters she faced, counting four strikeouts in the process.

The 'Cats started scoring early on, though. Ciara Trahan got the first hit of the day on a double down the left field line. Anna Jones would hit an RBI single to bat in Trahan for the first run of the game.

Texas State scored three runs in the third inning. Earls stole home to score run one of the inning. Vanderford's double down the left line scored Trahan for run two, and Anna Jones capped things off with an RBI single for the third run of the inning, fourth of the game.

Azua gave up her lone hit of the game in the 4th inning when the Tulsa batter doubled to center field, but Azua answered that with back-to-back strikeouts. The third out came on a pop up as Azua pitched a complete game with just one hit.

The Bobcats capped off the run rule in the bottom of the 5th, starting things off with Harvey getting on base from an error. From there, Earls bunted to get on base and Trahan was walked to fill the bases. Vanderford hit an RBI single down the left field like to score Harvey. Karmyn Bass would double to right on her at-bat to make it a 7-0 ball game.

Freshman Peyton Young came in to pinch hit with the chance to score the 8th run needed to complete the run rule. On a full count, Young was able to get the ball down and score Jones on a contest at home. At the end of 5, the 'Cats completed their second run-rule in two days.
