SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team defeated Incarnate Word 6-1 to secure its first victory of the season on Thursday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.Â
The Bobcats (1-2) gained an early advantage by winning the lone doubles point and took that momentum into their singles matches, where they won five of the six singles points.  Â
"Happy to get our first win of the season under our belt," said Texas State head coach Kendall Brooks. "Today was a great team win. We had to come out and take care of business and I thought the girls did a great job of that from top to bottom. Looking to build momentum on this for tomorrow's match."Â
DoublesÂ
UIW was only able to field two doubles pairs on Thursday, leaving the Bobcats needing only one doubles victory to secure the point. Playing as a doubles pair for the first time this season Sofia Fortuno and Maria Lora secured the doubles point for the Bobcats with a 6-2 victory on the second court. Â
On the first court Mae McCutcheon and Emily Niers, also playing their first doubles match as a pair, were defeated 6-2.Â
Singles Â
After securing her first doubles win of the season, Lora defeated UIW's Barborda Havlova 6-0, 6-0 on the fifth court to win her first singles match of the season and gain the Bobcats first singles point of the day. Â
On the fourth court, Andrea Pineda won her second singles match of the year and secured the second singles point for the Bobcats, after winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. This marks the second match in a row Pineda has defeated her opponent in straight sets.Â
To secure the match winning point, Fortuno continued the theme of straight set victories and defeated Ine Lamprecht 6-2, 6-3. This also marks back-to-back victories for Fortuno in singles play. Â
The last singles point came from Callie Creath, who made her first court debut today against UIW's Sofia Franco Salcedo. Franco Salcedo had won her last three singles matches, but Creath handed Franco Salcedo her second singles loss of the year. Creath won the first set 6-4 and despite being down early in the second set, fought back to win in a tie breaker 7-6 (7-2). Â
Playing on the second court, Niers was matched up with UIW's undefeated Isid Hernandez Leon. Niers fought hard but came up short in both sets, falling 6-4, 6-4. Â
McCutcheon was set to play on the sixth court, however UIW was unable to field a sixth singles player and forfeited the point to Texas State. Â
