SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State women's basketball is now on a three-game win streak after an 88-42 win over UNT-Dallas in Strahan Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Â
This is the first game this season that saw the Bobcats have four double-digit scorers, including
Nicole Leff (12),
Destiny Terrell (12),
Morgan Hill (12) and
Ebba Zalamans (11). For Zalamans it was a career high as a Bobcat, and Leff's game was a season high for her.
Â
Additionally, the Bobcats bench provided 44 bench points, which helps towards their status as one of the best benches in the nation, which is averaging over 30.6 points a night. All 12 dressed-out Bobcats played and contributed points today.Â
Â
WHAT HEAD COACH ZENARAE ANTOINE SAID: "Hats off to UNT-Dallas. They had to play a game yesterday and travel to play us today. Arguably their best player was out on concussion protocol, and they gave us everything they got in the beginning of the game. Definitely have respect for them and good luck to them the rest of the season. Looking forward for us, the word is discipline. We need to find ways to stay disciplined. That's, to me, where I'm at with this program. Is where is that next step. I told Destiny [Terrell] today, 'just because you can, doesn't mean you should.' You need to show some restraint and discipline in certain situations."
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
A short-staffed UNT-Dallas side came out in the first half and threw everything it had at the Bobcats. Texas State was held to a 15-point first half with 5-12 shooting, while the Trailblazers matched that with 12 points on 5-13 shooting. The Bobcats held the lead most of the way through the first quarter, but not without a good effort from UNT-Dallas.Â
Â
The second quarter was where the Bobcats were able to put some space between themselves and the visitors. The Bobcats were able to find more success at the free-throw line, going 8-9 in the second, to put a gap between themselves and UNT Dallas. At the half time break the Bobcats held a 10-point lead, largely thanks to a combined 15-points from Hill and Terrell.Â
Â
Out of the halftime break, it was all Bobcats. Early foul trouble for the Trailblazers, paired with lights-out shooting from the Bobcats was enough to allow the Bobcats to score 30. Texas State limited UNT-Dallas to just 10 points in the third. Texas State's 30 points came from 13-19 shooting including seven from
Taleiyah Gibbs and freshman
Saniya Burks. Those two off the bench helped the Bobcats to a productive third period.
Â
To close out the game, the Trailblazers were down to six players after Lauren Pete fouled out. The Bobcats were able to use that to their advantage to outscore the Trailblazers 23-7 and pushed themselves out to a 40+ point lead. Zalamans tallied seven of the Bobcats points in the fourth off 3-4 shooting, including her first three-pointer as a Bobcat.Â
Â
At the end of the game, Texas State won 88-42. The Bobcats are now 5-3 on the season and on a three-game win streak.
