Bobcats Overcome Slow Start to Down Tigers

HOUSTON – Overcoming a slow start, Texas State (5-3) went on to beat Texas Southern (2-6) Sunday afternoon by a score of 72-59 from the H&PE Arena. The victory extended the Bobcats' winning streak to three games.
 
"I learned that we could bounce back from a slow start and that these guys can give us the energy and effort that we need when we demand it out of them," said head coach Terrence Johnson. "They showed that they can play through some tough moments, and we did that today."
 
Four TXST players finished in double-figures led by Christian Turner with 18. The senior was 9-for-12 from the field, grabbed three rebounds and recorded three steals. Tyrel Morgan added 13 points on 6-of-15 shooting and came just shy of a potential triple-double with nine rebounds and seven assists. He also blocked two shots and recorded a steal.
 
Kaden Gumbs netted 12 points after knocking down 5-of-10 shots, dished out seven assists and recorded three steals. Adding 10 points was Joshua O'Garro, who retrieved five boards and had two assists.
 
Finishing with eight points and eight rebounds was Tylan Pope while Drue Drinnon contributed nine points off the bench as he knocked down three three-pointers in the first half.
 
Just two Bobcats would score a basket over the first 14 minutes of the contest. Turner netted eight as he knocked down his first four shots and Drinnon hit his three shots from beyond the arc. TXST would trail 22-17 but closed the half by scoring 11 of the final 19 points as the teams when into halftime tied.
 
With the score tied at 37, Texas State went on a 10-0 run that was capped off by a three-pointer from Joshua O'Garro in the left corner at the 12:11 mark.
 
The Tigers cut the lead to 49-45 after Kavion McClain scored the hosts' next eight points A 12-0 run followed by the Bobcats to put the game away. Capping off the scoring stretch was a posterizing dunk by Pope.
 
Next up for TXST is its first home game of December when the team hosts Arlington Baptist on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
