SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State women's basketball suffered a five point loss to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi in their home opener on Saturday night.
Jaylin Foster led the Bobcats in scoring with 14 points and eight rebounds on the night, with a perfect 6-6 effort from the free throw line. She has scored double digits in both of the Bobcats games so far this season.
WHAT HEAD COACH ZENARAE ANTOINE SAID: "You saw us with an opportunity to face a team that really looks a lot like a Sun Belt team. So we're going to take this game. It's only game two. We're going use those early learning lessons from the first quarter, truly it's the early going of this game. We understood the game that we were going to be playing. It's going to be important going forward to put together all four quarters of a game, not just three."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
TAMUCC scored first on the night, quickly putting themselves up 4-0 in the first minute of the game. From there, they kept the Bobcats at that four point deficit until a run by the Islanders pushed them out to a 16-4 lead. A Bobcat timeout helped slow down the Islanders momentum and the Bobcats were able to narrow the lead to nine at the end of the first quarter.
The Bobcats found their rhythm throughout the second quarter, going 8-17 from the field for 23 points in the third quarter. Highlighting the quarter was six points from freshman
Saniya Burks who added two rebounds and an assist on the quarter. She was a big part of the Bobcats 19 points off the bench in the second quarter, which helped the Bobcats bring the game within six at the halftime break.
Neither side was able to find success shooting in the third quarter. Both sides shot a combined 3-26, with the Bobcats scoring three and the Islanders knocking down seven with 3-8 free throw shooting. After the third quarter it was 45-35 in favor of the Islanders.
Texas State fought to erase the deficit in the fourth quarter but fell just short. Despite three Bobcats going for five points each and outscoring the Islanders, the Bobcats lost 62-57.
