Women's Basketball Starts Year Off with 75-71 Win in MAC-SBC Challenge

YPSILANTI, Michigan – Texas State women's basketball started the season off on the right foot with a gritty 75-71 win over Eastern Michigan. Texas State started off the 2024-2024 MAC-SBC Challenge with a win as the Sun Belt looks to claim the Challenge title for the second year.

Ja'Mia Harris led the Bobcats in scoring with 17 points on 5-11 shooting while going 7-9 from the free throw line. Jaylin Foster also added 15 points of her own with nine rebounds and four steals. The Bobcat bench also played a large role in the team success, with Texas State's bench outscoring Eastern Michigan's 42-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Texas State came out aggressive in the first quarter with an early seven points from Foster. The two teams traded points back and forth but ultimately it was a layup by Heather Baymon in the dying moments of the first quarter that helped the Bobcats go up 17-15 after 10 minutes of play.

The second quarter of play was when Harris came alive. She shot 2-3 while drawing three fouls and going 5-6 on her free throws for nine points in the second quarter alone. Eastern Michigan shot effectively, going 7-12 from the field, to give themselves a six-point lead at the halftime break.

A slow start to the third quarter saw the Bobcats with a 17-point deficit to overcome, but that challenge was not too much for the Bobcats. At the media time out the 'Cats trailed by 17, at the end of the quarter it was just a two-point spread. The comeback was highlighted by a big quarter from Destiny Terrell and Baymon. The two paired for 10 points of the Bobcats 26. It was Baymon's jumper in the dying seconds of the third quarter that made it a two-point game.

The fourth-quarter saw the Bobcats tally 19 points from seven different scorers. Mia Galbraith led with four points in the fourth, which included a fast break layup to givethe Bobcats a two point lead with 17 seconds to go in the game. From there, Texas State was able to add a few final points off some free throws as Eastern Michigan attempted to extend the game, to no avail.

Texas State started off the year with a 75-71 win over Eastern Michigan to give the Sun Belt its first win of the MAC-SBC Challenge.
