Men’s Hoops Defeats Ohio to Claim Fifth Place at Myrtle Beach Invitational

CONWAY, S.C. – The Texas State men's basketball team (4-3) wrapped up the Myrtle Beach Invitational with a 74-65 over Ohio in the fifth-place game Sunday night from the HTC Center.
 
Pacing TXST was Tylan Pope with a career-high 24 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double in a Bobcat uniform. He was 9-of-14 from the field and knocked down 2-of-3 three-point attempts.
 
Also reaching double-digits in points was Drue Drinnon (11), Kaden Gumbs (12) and Christian Turner (13). Gumbs handed out a game-high five assists while Tyrel Morgan grabbed a game best 11 rebounds.
 
Texas State outrebounded Ohio 48-27 with a 19-8 advantage on the offensive glass. In the paint, the maroon and gold scored 50 points while giving up just 18.
 
A back-and-forth contest early on would see Ohio take their largest lead of the first half at 12-10 as Jackson Paveletzke scored five straight points. TXST responded with a 7-0 run capped off by Pope's second three-pointer of the game.
 
Ohio would come back to tie the game at 23-23 but Texas State would take back the lead on a Turner layup. TXST would maintain the advantage for the rest of the period that ended with Morgan knocking down a jumper in the paint to send the team into halftime leading 35-31.
 
Seven straight points by Ohio saw it take a one-point advantage at the 17:54 mark of the second half. It would stay a one-point contest until Texas State went on a 9-1 run to go up 54-45.
 
The closest Ohio got the rest of the game was four points with the last time coming at 67-63 with 3:41 remaining on the clock. TXST ended the game on a 7-2 run that included holding Ohio scoreless for nearly three minutes.
