ABILENE, Texas – Senior forward
Joshua O'Garro recorded his first career double-double with career highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds Saturday afternoon at Abilene Christian. However, a shorthanded Texas State squad fell 72-60 to the Wildcats in the Moody Coliseum.
"Winning is tough and winning on the road is even tonight. ACU is a good team with a championship culture we knew coming into the game," said head coach
Terrence Johnson. "We never seemed to get settled tonight. They did a good job of dictating the flow and physicality fo the game. We have to watch film and get better. It is all bout the response."
With the result, the Bobcats are now 2-2 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 3-1.
O'Garro was 5-of-12 from the field but did his damage at the free throw line where he knocked down all 13 of his attempts. The Cayman Island native shared the team lead of three steals with
Christian Turner.
Also reaching double-figures was
Kaden Gumbs with 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting and going 5-for-5 at the charity stripe. Both
Drue Drinnon and
Tylan Pope netted nine points apiece.
The Bobcats trailed throughout the entire first half. The closest they would get would by 9-8 following a Gumbs three-pointer and an old-fashion three-point play by O'Garro.
A 32-19 lead was the largest for the Wildcats in the period. Gumbs and O'Garro would combine to score the final six points of the opening 20 minutes to help take the Bobcats into halftime down 32-25.
Layups by Gumbs and Pope to open the second half extended the scoring run to 10 consecutive points to cut the deficit to three.
Nine straight points by the hosts put them ahead 57-42 with 9:06 left on the clock. The deficit was too much to overcome as the Bobcats never got closer than 12 points for the rest of the game.
Next up for TXST is the Myrtle Beach Invitational that begins on Thursday when the Bobcats take on Bradley at 4:30 pm on ESPNU.
