Bobcats Drop Myrtle Beach Invitational Opener

CONWAY, S.C. – The Texas State men's basketball team (2-3) fell 82-68 in its first game of the Myrtle Beach Invitational to Bradley (4-1) Thursday evening at the HTC Center.
 
Leading the way offensively was Kaden Gumbs with 19 points with 16 of his points coming in the second half. The sophomore also shared the team lead of three assists and two steals with Tyrel Morgan and Christian Turner, respectively.
 
Also reaching double-figures was Tylan Pope with 15 points and Morgan added 14 in his return to the court after missing the past two games. Pope grabbed a team best seven rebounds along with Joshua O'Garro.
 
A tight game saw the Braves take control with a 16-2 run spanning nearly seven minutes that included 11 straight points over the last 4:49. The Bobcats scored six straight to cut the deficit to 26-18, however, Bradley ended the half by scoring 18 of the final 24 points to take a 20-point lead into halftime.
 
After making just 28.1% of its shots in the first half, Texas State nearly doubled its shooting percentage in the final 20 minutes as the team made 14-of-25 field goals (56.0%). The Bobcats also made 15-of-19 free throw attempts in the second half and were able to cut the deficit to 10 thrice, the last of which was at 72-62 with 4:35 left on the clock following two free throws by Gumbs.
 
Next up for TXST is a matchup with either Princeton or Wright State on Friday. Tipoff for the game will be at 6:30 p.m. CT and can be viewed on ESPN+.
