Bobcats Fall Short on the Road to Horned Frogs

FORT WORTH, Texas – In its first road game of the season, Texas State never went away as it battled TCU on Tuesday night at the Schollmaier Arena that ended with a 76-71 Horned Frogs win.

With the result, the Bobcats are now 2-1 on the season while TCU remains undefeated at 3-0.

"It was a hard-fought game. I think whenever you walk into a Big XII arena, you know what you're going to get. I'm proud of my guys as they fought really, really hard," said head coach Terrence Johnson. "We were a little short-handed tonight, but I will take that effort form those guys every night. Coach Dixon has a great team and they're going to be really good in Big XII play. Hopefully, this is a step for us in the right direction.

Tylan Pope led a contingent of our TXST players scoring double-digit points as he scored a career-high 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting and was 5-for-5 at the free throw line. Dylan Dawson netted 15 behind four made three-pointers and Joshua O'Garro scored 14 with 12 coming in the first 20 minutes of action. Kaden Gumbs recorded 10 points as he made 4-of-8 shots and knocked down both of his charity stripe attempts.

Leading the way on the glass was Christian Turner with eight rebounds. Drue Drinnon came off the bench to dish out six assists while O'Garro recorded two steals.

As a team, Texas State went 24-for-57 (42.1%) from the field. The squad also recorded their third consecutive game shooting over 80% from the free throw line with an 18-for-21 (85.7%) performance.

The Horned Frogs scored the first seven points of the game and 13 of the first 17. They eventually stretched the lead to 16-6 after a Brendan Wenzel three-pointer. Six consecutive points were scored by the Bobcats courtesy of two O'Garro layups and another from Tylan Pope to cut the deficit to four at the 12:59 mark.

Another six straight points were scored by Texas State that saw Drinnon knock down four free throws cut the deficit to 23-21 with just over eight minutes left in the half. After two TCU free throws, the Bobcats went on 10-0 run to go up by six with Drinnon knocking down a trey for the go-ahead bucket.

Texas State would hold a 37-35 lead heading into halftime after the hosts score five of the last seven points of the period.

A layup by Turner began the scoring in the second half. However, TCU would go on a 9-0 run to retake the lead over the next 2:19.

Dawson knocked down his second three-pointer of the game with 10:54 left in the game to cut the deficit to 51-50. A 13-2 run by the Horned Frogs over the next 3:18 would extend their advantage to double digits.

The Bobcats wouldn't go away and used a 10-2 scoring stretch to get within four after a Dawson trey with 1:32 left in the game. Missed free throws kept TCU from pulling away late and Dawson knocked down a three-pointer as 2.8 seconds remaining on the clock to cut the deficit to 74-71. Noah Reynolds made two free throws to seal the game for the hosts.

Next for TXST is a trip to take on Abilene Christian on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. tip.
