Volleyball Sweeps in Home Opener vs Troy

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State remains perfect in conference play following a 3-0 sweep over the Troy Trojans in the Bobcats 2024 season home opener on Friday night.

Highlighting the night for the Bobcats was out-blocking the Trojans 11.0 team blocks to 2.0 and Samantha Wunsch's 7th-consecutive double-digit kill night. The redshirt sophomore had 15 kills on 28 attempts as she led the Bobcats while carrying a .464 attack percentage.

WHAT HEAD COACH SEAN HUIET SAID: "Any time you win 3-0 it's a good night. We've been on the road for a really long time, and I think there were more jitters and nerves because we haven't played at home. Troy is a very good team and they're very well coached. They had an unfortunate injury this morning and had to rearrange their lineup with only one middle on the court. I thought at times that caught us more off guard than it did them. I was hoping we'd be able to adjust a bit sooner, but I thought going 3-0 against a good Troy team is a good night."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first set started out with a lot of back and forth between the two sides. With 15 tied scores and six lead changes, neither side really ever took a large lead that carried the momentum of the set. The Bobcats werew able to battle from down 13-17 after a timeout to come back to tie the match at 20. From there, Sam Wunsch had three of the Bobcats final five points in the set to win set one 25-23.

Through set two, the Bobcats found themselves down early in the set. At the. Media timeout, Texas State had only led one time in the set. After the media timeout, though, Texas State took a lead and was able to carry it until the end. Wunsch tacked on another five kills while going for three blocks in the second set. That, paired with four blocks from Jade Defraeye helped the Bobcats to a 25-20 win in set two.

The third set came down to tie scores a lot of the way through. While matching points all the way up until 9-9, Texas State found themselves down after a few points went in favor of the Trojans. It took until a tied 16-16 score for the Bobcats to swing momentum in their favor. From there, a 4-0 run to make it 20-16 gave the Bobcats the cushion they needed to take the sweep. Texas State won set three by a 25-21 score after five more kills from Wunsch and three from Defraeye.
