SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State remains the lone undefeated team in the Sun Belt West Division after weekend two of conference play. The Bobcats improve to 4-0 in Sun Belt action after another 3-0 sweep of the Troy Trojans on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Sam Wunsch once again led the Bobcats on the night with 12 kills after a late-match effort to push the Bobcats to the sweep. Another highlight of the night was a 39 assist effort as she went one shy of a double-double with nine digs to help the Bobcats stay perfect in SBC action.
Â
WHAT HEAD COACH SEAN HUIET SAID:Â "Like I said last night, any time you beat a good team 3-0 it's always a good day. I liked our energy and some things we are doing a lot better today than I did last night. I thought we got better. We talk a lot about trying to get better each match. Troy is a great team. They are suffering some injuries right now and going through some stuff, but again I thought they made it competitive with what they have. They are a good team and really well coached, I think we'll see them down the road towards the end and in the tournament. But I'm really proud of our kids for two 3-0 wins this weekend."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first set quickly swung in favor of the Bobcats with just two tied scores including 1-1 and 2-2. After that, the Bobcats went up 3-2 and never gave up a lead, extending it to as many as seven. Texas State won set one 25-18 in part thanks to
Bailey Hanner's six kills on seven attempts, and
Caelyn Emmerling's five kills on six attempts. Texas State hit a team .483 in the opening set with 17 kills.
Â
Troy got out to a lead at the start of set two, going up 5-1. From there, though, a battle from the Bobcats tied things back up at 15-15. The two sides went back and forth until it was 20-20, but the Bobcats 5-2 run including three-straight points to end the second set got them the win. MJ McCurdy tallied five kills in set two to lead the Bobcats.
Â
Sam Wunsch came alive in set three with seven of the team's 14 kills to help the Bobcats seal the deal on the sweep. At the media timeout just two points separated the teams and the 'Cats were down 13-15. From there, Texas State swung momentum back to go up 19-16 and carried that through to the end of the set. Texas State won set three 25-19.
