Soumare Nets Brace in Senior Night Victory

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior Mady Soumare netted a brace in helping lead Texas State to a 3-0 win over Georgia Southern on Senior Night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The victory assured the Bobcats of the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Texas State closes out the regular season with a 10-4-5 record and 6-1-3 in the Sun Belt to finish second overall. The Eagles end their year at 6-11-2 overall and 3-6-1 in league play.

With her brace, Soumare increased her season total to eight. Also finding the back of the net was Lily Erb for her first goal of the season. Chloe Jones set a new career high with two assists on the night.

The Bobcats outshot the visitors 19-8 and held a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. Leading the way for the team was the trio of Helen Alormenu, Erb and Soumare.

Katelyn Chrisman made the third consecutive start in goal and recorded her third straight shutout. She has not allowed a goal in the last 319:29 that she has been on the pitch. The senior made five saves in her final match in San Marcos to move into a tie for ninth in program history with 116 career saves.

The Bobcats had a couple of shots on frame in the first 45 minutes but none that really challenged GS' Quinn Wilson. The best chance in the first half came from Faith Phillps when her tight angled shot in the 22nd minute was snagged by Chrisman.

Late in the 48th minute, Anna Dunch sent a long ball down the field that Chloe Jones got to before it crossed the end line. The junior midfielder sent a cross into the box that bounced between two defenders and right to Erb, who hit the ball on the first touch into the upper right corner for the opening goal of the match.

Jones would send the ball down right wing that saw Kaylie Smith get to it before it crossed the sideline. The Corpus Christi native sent a cross into the box that Soumare headed down and into the goal to double Texas State's advantage nearly four minutes after the opening tally.

Near the end of the 58th minute, Mya Ulloa was taken down just over 20 yards out from goal. Alormenu almost found the back of the net as she sent the free kick towards frame but was denied by a leaping Wilson.

Ulloa attempted a shot from distance in the 64th minute that was blocked. The ball came back to the fifth-year senior, who then laid off a pass to an oncoming Soumare. The Parisian avoided a defender and sent a low, hard shot into the bottom of the right corner to increase the lead to 3-0.

The Bobcats kept the pressure on Georgia Southern and had a couple of other chances to increase the lead. One opportunity came from Alexis Neal when she took a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that clanked off the right woodwork. Late in the match, Lucy Hart took a left-footed shot that Wilson had to make a leaping save on to keep the ball out of the net.

Next for TXST is the Sun Belt Tournament in Foley, Alabama at the Foley Sports Complex. First up in the quarterfinals will be No. 6 seed App State on Monday with kickoff set for 11 a.m.
