Bobcats Sweep Arkansas State on Friday Night

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State volleyball got itself back in the win column with a sweep over Arkansas State to start off 'Dig Pink' weekend in Strahan Arena on the right foot.

Highlighted by three Bobcats with double-digit kills and Ryann Torres tallying 41 assists in just three sets, the Bobcats were able to put away the Red Wolves in just three sets. Sam Wunsch led with 12 kills on the night, but Caelyn Emmerling and Bailey Hanner tallied 10 of their own each.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The match started out back and forth between the two sides until back to back kills from Caelyn Emmerling gave the 'Cats a 11-8 lead that forced an Arkansas State timeout. Out of that timeout, the Bobcats put together another run to get themselves up 16-13. Arkansas State was able to battle back and tied things up at 21 apiece, but a gritty showing from the Bobcats at the end of the set was the difference. A decisive set-point kill from Bailey Hanner was the difference maker for the Bobcats to win 25-23.

Ryann Torres set the ball effectively for the Bobcats in the second set which helped the Bobcats to a 25-17 win highlighted by a .394 attack percentage. Her 16 assists helped Sam Wunsch to six kills in set two. That, paired with effective defense from the Bobcats helped Texas State to go up two sets.

Set three was a bit more balanced between the two sides, but Texas State was still able to come out on top. Highlighted by four serves from MJ McCurdy with two aces in the middle, the Bobcats were able to put together a run from behind to catch up to Arkansas State at 10 apiece. That, and a serve run by Alyssa Ortega helped the Bobcats go up 15-12. From there, the Bobcats controlled the momentum of the game through to the end to win the third set 25-20.

Texas State is now 11-7 on the season with a 5-2 record in Sun Belt play and tied for first place in the Sun Belt West Division.
