MONROE, La. – All 10 Texas State men's basketball players that saw action scored Saturday afternoon in the team's 67-54 win over ULM from inside the Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
The victory sees the Bobcats snap a five-game losing streak and improve to 7-10 on the season and 1-4 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Warhawks sit at 4-11 overall, 0-5 in conference play and have dropped eight straight contests.
"I'm ecstatic! It has been a long time coming. We have been working really hard but sometimes work doesn't necessarily guarantee results," said head coach
Terrence Johnson. "I'm proud of my team because they kept believing no matter what the outcomes were in the previous games. I'm hoping this is something we can build off of and we have the right guys in the locker room to do that."
Jordan Mason led all players with 16 points on 7-of-17 shooting while also dishing out three assists and blocking a shot. Knocking down all five of his shot attempts including four from beyond the arc was
Coleton Benson to total 15 points. Also reaching double-figures was
Kaden Gumbs with 10 points. The freshman also added three rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Both
Brandon Love and
Davion Sykes grabbed seven rebounds and scored eight and seven points, respectively. Love also rejected two shots to increase his season total to 36, which places him ninth in program history as he surpassed Kavin Gilder-Tilbury's 2016-17 campaign mark.
The Bobcats limited the Warhawks to 33.9% (20-of-59) shooting and just 1-of-14 (7.1%) on three-point tries. TXST went 23-for-47 (48.9%) from the field including 14-of-26 (53.8%) in the second half while knocking down 6-of-11 (54.5%) shots from beyond the arc while turning the ball over a season-low seven times.
The first six points of the game for the Warhawks came from Jerry Ngopot to hold a four-point advantage. Four quick points in less than 20 seconds with the last being a fastbreak layup by Sykes to tie the game 10-10. Immediately afterwards, two layups by Tyreke Locure along with two Nika Metskhvarishvili free throws put ULM back ahead, this time by six.
Six straight points gave the Warhawks their largest lead of the first half at 26-19 with 4:44 on the clock. Benson knocked down a three-pointer that started a 14-0 run for the Bobcats over a 4:19 span. ULM did hit a trey before the halftime buzzer as TXST took a 33-29 advantage into the break.
The second half began with Texas State scoring 23 of the first 28 points and limiting the hosts to just one made free throw in the first 8:47. The run was capped off by Benson converting a four-point play and then hitting another trey to give the Bobcats a 53-35 lead.
ULM would chip away both the closest it got was 11 with 3:06 remaining.
