Gumbs and Sykes Net Career-Highs Wednesday Night

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Both Kaden Gumbs and Davion Sykes set new career-high offensively with 17 and 16 points, respectively, Wednesday night against Louisiana. However, their performances weren't enough as Texas State fell 86-68 in Strahan Arena.

The setback drops the Bobcats to 7-11 overall and 1-5 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Ragin' Cajuns are now 10-8 on the year and 3-3 in conference play.

Gumbs was 7-for-10 from the field and made the team's lone three-pointer of the night. The freshman also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists. Sykes came off the bench to make 6-of-11 shots and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line. He also totaled five rebounds coming off the bench.

Jordan Mason contributed 12 points on the evening with 10 coming in the second half. Adding nine points off the bench was Dontae Horne as he did most of his damage at the charity stripe with a 7-for-7 night.

A back-and-forth affair early, TXST took their lone lead of the night at 11-10 after four straight points by Christian Turner. The visitors would retake the lead on a three-pointer next time down the court. Twice the Bobcats tied the game over the next minute with the last time being on a layup courtesy of Turner at the 14:12 mark.

Louisiana would slow extend its advantage and led by many as 18 following a 12-2 run late in the first half.

The second half saw the Cajuns stretch their lead to as much as 74-50 with 7:22 remaining. Texas State wouldn't back down and using runs of 11, six and five points, got the deficit down to 15 but it would be with less than a minute remaining in the contest.

Next up for the Bobcats is a home game against Arkansas State on Saturday. The contest will start at 4:15 or 30 minutes after the women's game concludes.
