Postgame Transcript: Brian Holloway and Ismail Mahdi (Sept. 23, 2023)

The running back and linebacker spoke with the media after the game

Ismail Mahdi, Running Back
How was this offense able to rally in that second half to score those 35 points

Just believing, just knowing that that's not the brand of football we play, we're way better than that. We got into halftime, we talked to each other. In the first half we were doing things but it was just little things, we get in the red zone and fumble or just not executing and stuff. We got in at halftime, we talked to each other and we knew we were a better team than them coming out of halftime, so just executing and stuff like this.

100 yards rushing, just tell me how you were able to get that?
The O-Line, just huge props to those guys. They did a great job up front making holes for me, all I had to do was hit them and run fast, so I want to give big props to them. It was all them, the O-Line.

What was it like in that locker room at halftime with the coaches, what were they saying?
They were making us believe, we just really looked ourselves in the mirror and told us that we was playing bad and that we weren't executing. We're not playing to the level of football that we play. So it was just telling us we got to just lock in and just execute really just do your job is really what Coach Kinne said was do your job.

What is it going to take to continue this momentum?
Just not getting complacent. Just keep going and don't get level headed. Just keep going, move on from this week and get ready for Southern Miss and conference play and stuff like that. We gotta keep pushing forward and not getting complacent. Just keep going.

Brian Holloway, Linebacker
On what happened at halftime to change the game...
We just rallied together. Honestly, I was getting an IV during halftime, so I don't really know what our coach had to say. But I know what he's said in the past, you know, just, if we just play the game, the way that we play in practice, and we do our job at a high level, we'll be alright. Coach Kenny just said there was no panic. You know, we know what we're capable of doing. We knew we came out a little slow, but you know, there was no panic at all. We were good. We know we know what we had to do to get the job done.

Were they throwing anything at you on the first half that you weren't anticipating when you're looking at the Wolf Pack during the week?
I'm going to be honest. It was basically what we expected. You know, they're going to try to run the ball and then they're going to try to get the ball to their star wide receiver here. So it wasn't anything that they were doing. It was really just our execution that that was keeping us from, you know, getting to where we wanted to be.

On the penalties and turnovers...
It's still the beginning of the season. You know, four is a four game so you know, we just need to pay attention to the details, you know, and be be more aware of the little things that can really cost you at the end of the game, but no, it's it's nothing that it's nothing new to us, you know, we you know, we're we're gonna get it together and we anticipate playing better next week for sure.

What second half adjustments were you making on defense?
There wasn't there wasn't much, just like little here and there things you know, it was really about just getting the guys together and you know, just saying, Hey, guys, we need to we need to tighten up. We need to do what we're capable of doing and play at a high level. Just do your job. Make the plays that come to you. So it wasn't it wasn't anything major. It was just we just needed to focus a little more. And then I think we showed that in the second half.

Coach Kinne was talking about like three captains out just tell me like how these players you know, being able to step up where, you know, when you have so many players out being able to get especially when you get a win like this?
It definitely doesn't help having you know, big big time players out. But that just means more guys have to step up, you know, and you have to, you have to rally them and you have to get them on the same page and you have to make them realize like, hey, like, we need you like next man up mentality. You know, and, and I think those guys did a good job of stepping up to that's a good thing. You know, Coach, Coach Kinne says it all the time, we had a lot of depth. And that depth kind of gets us out of bad situations and times like this.

3-1 start, best start for almost a decade. Just tell me how this team, even though there's a lot to say but just how this team come together just to get off to the best start in school history.
Yeah, it's a good feeling. You know, I've only been here it's my second year so you know, compared to last year, you know, it's definitely you know, we've we've stepped up and brought in a lot of new guys and it's the culture is changing here. It's a good feeling. You know, we know we have a team that is capable of winning the conference championship. And so you know, we just, we need to, you know, rally together and stick together and play football we know we can play.
