SAN MARCOS, Texas – Following a breakout season in 2022, Texas State wide receiver
Ashtyn Hawkins was named to the 11th annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List on Thursday.
Hawkins is officially in the running for the award, which recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity. In addition, Hawkins fits the award's criteria of either being born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas high school and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or currently playing at a Texas Division I four-year college.
Hawkins, from DeSoto, Texas, enters his third season as a Bobcat after starting his collegiate career at Cisco College. The junior is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he had 56 catches for 587 yards and seven touchdowns in nine games. He finished 12th in the Sun Belt in receptions despite missing the last three games due to injury. He was named an All-Sun Belt honorable mention by coaches and media and All-Sun Belt Third Team by PFF.
In 21 career games, Hawkins had 86 catches for 871 yards and eight touchdowns. He also has 101 punt return yards on 10 career attempts.
Entering the upcoming season, Hawkins has been named preseason all-conference as a wide receiver by PFF,
Athlon Sports and
Phil Steele. He was also tabbed a preseason all-conference punt returner by
Athlon Sports and
Phil Steele.
The Campbell Award Watch List will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to five finalists in December. Each round of advancing players is selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans, and previous winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler, Texas for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for January 10, 2024.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award was announced in 2023 by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler.
The Bobcats, who are midway through their fall camp, open the season at Baylor on Sept. 2 (6 pm, ESPN+). They start their six-game home schedule on Sept. 16 against Jackson State.
