SAN MARCOS, Texas – A rising offensive mind in college football, Texas State's first-year offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich was named to the 2023
Dave Campbell's Texas Football "40 Under 40" List.
Â
A list to honor the best young coaches in the state of Texas, the
Dave Campbell's "40 Under 40" list featured 11 coaches from FBS level, including Leftwich. He was one of six FBS coaches on the offensive side of the ball.
Â
Leftwich, who was hired at Texas State after head coach GJ Kinne took over the program in early December, takes the reins of the Bobcat offense in 2023 after leading the nation's No. 1 scoring offense in all of NCAA Division I at UIW last season. The Cardinals, who reached the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs and won the Southland Conference championship, averaged 51.5 points per game and 581.2 yards of total offense (second-best in FCS). Leftwich's offense was also top-three in the nation in first downs (first), passing efficiency (first), passing offense (second), and completion percentage (third).
Â
Leftwich also mentored Walter Payton Award winner Lindsey Scott Jr. last season at UIW. The quarterback set an FCS record for touchdowns and accumulated more than 5,300 total yards of offense during the All-American season.
Â
Starting his collegiate coaching career at UIW, Leftwich spent five seasons with the Cardinals (2018-22) and helped the program win three conference titles. He tutored three All-American quarterbacks during that time: Jon Copeland (2018-19), Cameron Ward (2021) and Scott Jr. (2022).
Â
Leftwich was a quarterback at UTEP from 2013-15 and also coached high school football in Texas before joining UIW as a graduate assistant in 2018.
Â
Leftwich joins Kinne as
Dave Campbell's "40 Under 40" honorees. Kinne was selected to the list in 2022 when he was the head coach at UIW.
