SAN MARCOS, Texas – Through the first four innings, Texas State (32-16, 14-9 Sun Belt) scored six runs on its way to a series clinching 8-2 win Saturday afternoon over Georgia State (24-24, 11-12 Sun Belt) at Bobcat Ballpark.
Â
"I thought we played really well today.
Zeke Wood was really good as he battled through some cramps and shutdown a good Georgia State offense," said head coach
Steven Trout. "Biggest thing is we got to them early, which is what I asked the guys to do to take the momentum."
Â
Zeke Wood (2-2) went 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts and allowed two runs on four hits to pick up the win. Taking the loss was Rafael Acosta (2-2) after giving up five runs on seven hits in the first 2.1 innings of the game.
Â
Striking out three in 2.1 scoreless innings was
Nathan Medrano while
Cameron Bush tossed a scoreless ninth with two punch outs.
Â
At the plate,
Cade Manning,
Chase Mora and
August Ramirez all drove in two runs apiece. All the RBI from Manning and Ramirez came on opposite field home runs.
Davis Powell finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a triple. Also recording two base knocks was
Ben McClain.
Â
Back-to-back singles from McClain and Powell started off the Bobcats' offensively. They would both move into scoring position on a failed pickoff attempt.
Jose Gonzalez singled to left center to bring home the first run of the game and Mora would hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
Â
With one out in the second,
Ryan Leary singled through the right side. Manning would follow by sending an 0-1 offering over the left center field wall for his two-run homer for his ninth of the season and increase the lead to four runs.
Â
Mora added an RBI single in the third. With two gone in the fourth, Powell tripled to right center and would come home on a passed ball to make it 6-0.
Â
The Panthers would score their only runs in the sixth on an infield single and wild pitch.
Â
Rashawn Galloway worked a walk with an out in the eighth. A 1-2 pitch to Ramirez saw the lefty batter send it over the left field wall for his 10th long ball of the season and bring home the final runs of the game.
Â
The series concludes tomorrow with a first pitch set for 12 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
