SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State tennis earned their third conference win this season after defeating ULM 5-2 on Senior Day at the Bobcat Tennis Complex. This is the first seven-win season for the Bobcats since 2018.
"I think you hear about team wins all the time, and this was absolutely one of those," said Texas State tennis Head Coach
Kendall Brooks. "This was a gritty team win, every single person on or off the court today contributed to that and were in the fight until the end. I am so proud of the girls for their resilience today, and willingness to do whatever it took to get the win. I am beyond happy to send Kate [Malazonia] off in her senior day match with a win."
"I think this puts us in a good position heading into the conference tournament with a lot of momentum and confidence that we can battle with any team," Brooks said.
Doubles
Texas State (7-14, 3-8 Sun Belt) lost their third straight doubles point, beginning when
Kate Malazonia and
Mae McCutcheon lost the first match of the day 6-1 on court one.
Sofia Fortuno and
Maria Lora responded with a 7-5 win on line two over Oleksandra Balaba and Mackenzie King. This was the first victory for the duo on the middle court and they have won four consecutive doubles matches.
ULM (5-17, 3-8 Sun Belt) clinched the doubles point on court three when Alice Klimteby and Giovanna Pereira defeated
Jadeh Chan and
Emily Niers 7-6 (7-1).
Singles
All but one singles matches were won by Texas State, and all the first sets were won by the Bobcats.
Kiana Graham put Texas State on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 win on the top court.
Mae McCutcheon picked up her third straight win and extended the lead after taking down Tamara Bachmann 7-6, 6-1. Graham and McCutcheon both kept their win streaks alive.
Kate Malazonia had the lone loss of the day which tied the match up, the senior lost 6-3, 2-6, 2-6 to Alice Klinteby.
Sofia Fortuno responded with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win on court five, this was the 10
th singles win for the sophomore and the most among the Bobcats.
Emily Niers clinched the match for Texas State after a comeback three-set win on court two. Niers fought back in the 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6) match to give the Bobcats their third conference win.
Andrea Pineda closed out the day defeating Giovanna Pereira 7-5, 7-5.
