Bobcats Sweep Series Against ULM with Two Saturday Wins

SAN MARCOS, TX – Texas State softball swept the ULM Warhawks in a three-game series following a two-win day in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader. After beating the Warhawks 5-1 and 3-1 on the day, the Bobcats improve to 29-19-1 on the season and 9-7-1 in Sun Belt play.

GAME 1: TXST 5, ULM 1
The Bobcats came out hot in game one when Emilee Baker singled as the second batter up. From there the Bobcats would load the bases with JJ Smith up to bat. The Bobcats would get two bases-loaded walks to score the first two runs of the day.

Tori McCann would get the first two of her eventual four strikeouts in the second inning. This would mark McCann's 20th appearance of the season and improve her record to 7-7 on the season.

In the third inning the Bobcats would tack on its final three runs of the night. After an Anna Jones double, Karmyn Bass' single would be enough for Jones to score. From there, Trahan singled up the middle for Bass to score and another single from Randolph would help the Smith to score.

The Warhawks tacked on a consolation homer run in the top of the fourth, but when the Bobcat pitching staff allowed just one more hit in the final three innings, ULM was unable to stage a comeback.

GAME 2: TXST 3, ULM 1
The Bobcat defense started out strong in the first inning when a double play would end the first inning.

From there, the Bobcats went three up, three down to start the game and gave up a homerun in the second inning. From there, the team reset itself and came out swinging in the bottom of the second.

Head coach Ricci Woodard opted to make a pitching change in the second, taking out Karsen Pierce for Jessica Mullins. Mullins would strike out her first batter faced.

Anna Jones would triple to right center when she smacked the ball of the outfield fence. JJ Smith would hit the sacrifice fly to left field for her to score, her second run of the weekend. An additional pair of singles in the bottom of the two would get left on after Hannah Earls ground out to end the inning.

After two innings it was a 1-1 ball game.

A pair of errors would help the Warhawks get on base in the third, but with no runs scored. It would take until the bottom of the fifth for another team to get so much as a hit off the lockdown pitching staffs.

In the bottom of the 5th the Bobcats would take a double down the left field line from Vanderford to advance Earls home and take the lead. From there, Mullins tacked on her fourth strikeout in the top of the 6th to help keep the game 2-1.

JJ Smith would score the final run of the game off a Hannah Earls single. After Mullins went three up, three down with two strikeouts in the 7th, the Bobcats would take the win and the series sweep.

Up next the Bobcats will head to Waco, TX for a midweek meeting with the Baylor Bears. From there, the Bobcats will head East to face Marshall in a three-game weekend series starting April 28th.
