SAN MARCOS, TX – Texas State softball returned to winning ways in 3-2 win over ULM on Friday night. It would be a
Karmyn Bass homerun in the third inning that got the ball rolling for the result.
Jessica Mullins started out in the pitching circle with a four-pitch strikeout to start the game. The junior would go on to throw the 42
nd complete game of her career on the night, putting her in the top-10 in school history for complete games.
After ULM goes three up, three down in the first three innings with four Mullins strikeouts, the Bobcats are able to find a way to break the deadlock.
With two strikes looming over her head,
Karmyn Bass took a swing and sent the ball far out the left field fence to get the Bobcats on board. This is the freshman's third home run of the season, her first inside Bobcat Stadium.
The Warhawks were finally able to get a hit in the fourth, but to no scoring threat. Through four innings played, no Warhawk had passed second base.
Texas State tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning off a slew of singles.
Sara Vanderford would score on
Katarina Zarate's sacrifice fly while
Anna Jones scored on
Karmyn Bass' single.
The Bobcats held a 3-0 lead after four innings.
Mullins came up with two more strikeouts to keep the Warhawks scoreless in the fifth.
ULM opted for a pitching change in the top of the 5
th that would keep the Bobcats from finding another run in the game.
The Warhawks pulled back two runs off a pair of singles in the 6
th.
When the Bobcats were unable to score in the 7
th inning, the pressure fell on the shoulders of Mullins to close the game out.
Mullins would strike out the first batter up after a seven-pitch at-bat. Then, she strikes out the second on an eight-pitch at-bat. To end the game, the Warhawks batter would hit on an 0-1 count and fly out to the awaiting
Ciara Trahan to end the game.
Mullins would end the night with eight strikeouts and just one walk in 106 pitches.
The Bobcats improve to 27-19-1 on the season with a 7-7-1 record in conference play. The Bobcats now hold a 17-10 record at home throughout the 2023 season.
Up next, Texas State will play a doubleheader inside Bobcat Stadium against the Warhawks. The pair of games were originally scheduled as single games on Saturday and Sunday but due to anticipated rainstorms on Sunday, the teams will now play a doubleheader.
Saturday's games will start at 2 and 4 p.m. and will still be streamed on ESPN+.
