Bobcats Drop Close Contest to Red Wolves

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Another one-run game was played between Texas State and Arkansas State. However, the Bobcats were unable to pull off another walk-off victory as the Red Wolves claimed a 5-4 contest Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.

The Bobcats are now 18-9 on the season and 4-4 in the Sun Belt Conference while ASU is 9-15 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Kyler Carmack (2-1) picked up the win as he went 6.1 innings and struck out five while surrendering three runs on four walks and three hits. Earning his first save of the season was Jacob Conover after throwing two scoreless innings. Taking the loss was Zeke Wood (1-2). The right-hander allowed five runs, three of them earned, on five hits and two walks while recording four strikeouts.

Half of Texas State's hits came from Chase Mora. Also with a base knock was Ryder Hernandez, who hit a three-run home run, and Ben McClain.

The Red Wolves plated a run in the first on a single from Kody Darcy. They would tack on four more runs in the fifth behind a couple of Bobcat miscues to go up 5-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, TXST was able to load the bases on walks drawn by Peyton Lewis and Daylan Pena and a single from Mora. Following a pitching change, Kameron Weil hit a fly ball down the left field line that was deep enough for Pena to tag from third to score. Hernandez then smashed a 1-1 offering into the netting above the left field wall for his fourth homer of the season to cut the deficit to a run.

Pena would reach on another free pass in the next inning and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. However, he would be stranded as Conover induced a ground out to end the frame.

The series finale is scheduled for a 12 p.m. first pitch tomorrow from Bobcat Ballpark.
