Bobcats Drop Series Opener at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – Texas State's Davis Powell and Kameron Weil finished the night with two hits, of which one was a double, in Friday's series opener at Coastal Carolina to pace the team at the plate.

The Chanticleers claimed the opener 19-0 at Springs Brooks Stadium that saw them score in all eight frames they came to the plate.

With the result, the Bobcats are now 15-7 overall and 2-2 in the Sun Belt while CCU improved to 13-6 and 3-1 in conference action.

Picking up the win was Jacob Morrison (3-0) as he struck out eight in five innings Suffering his first loss of the season was Levi Wells (4-1) after surrendering eight runs on six hits and three walks in 1.1 innings.

Five TXST hurlers were used out of the bullpen. Otto Wofford had the best day as worked a scoreless inning with a strikeout. All four outs recorded by McCray Gann were via a strikeout and Sam Peterson worked the final two innings in his collegiate debut.

Only other Bobcat to record a hit was August Ramirez with a single back up the middle in the eighth. Daylan Pena reached base twice on two walks.

Weil led off the game with a double and would advance to third on a fly out. Jose Gonzalez put runners on the corners as he was plunked on the second pitch to him. However, the next two batters were put out and strand both Gonzalez and Weil.

The scoring started for CCU with a grand slam in the first off the bat of Zack Beach. The hosts would put up crooked numbers in the second, third and sixth innings as well.

Game two of the series is scheduled for a first pitch at 1 p.m. CT.
