SAN MARCOS, Texas – Driving in a season-high four runs was
Davis Powell in helping Texas State (14-6) to a 7-5 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (11-11) Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
Â
"It started with [Tony] Robie and
Austin Smith. They both did a good job of throwing the baseball and gave us the opportunity to get off to a good start," said head coach
Steven Trout. "Got a couple of big swings there from
Davis Powell and Brother [
Jose Gonzalez]."
Â
"However, I didn't think it was a great night for us. Emotionally we weren't there, and energy wasn't there like it was this weekend. You have to show up to play every day. That is probably where I'm frustrated a little bit is that we have to do a better job of getting them ready to play every single day. I'm happy with the win but need to come out tomorrow and play better."
Â
Picking up the win on the mound was
Austin Smith (1-1). The lefty threw three scoreless innings while striking out two and allowing just two hits.
Carson Keithley retired the final batter of the game to pick up his first career save. Taking the loss was Jamie Ramirez, Jr. after he allowed five runs on three hits in the first 2.1 innings.
Â
Powell finished the game 2-for-4 and scored twice.
Jose Gonzalez plated two runs while
Kameron Weil scored three times on the night.
Â
The Islanders scored twice in the first on two singles. The Bobcats answered back with two runs of their own coming on groundouts from
Daylan Pena and Gonzalez.
Â
Weil singled to center and would come home as
Davis Powell hit his first home run in a Texas State that stayed fair down the left field line. Gonzalez made it back-to-back long balls with an opposite field shot for his eighth homer of the season that put TXST ahead 5-2.
Â
The score would remain that way until the seventh.
Ben McClain led off with a single and Weil was able to draw a walk. Both players would move into scoring position on a wild pitch. Powell sent a 1-1 offering back up the middle to drive in both runners to increase the lead to five.
Â
TAMUCC would get two runs back in the next half inning on a home run from Max Puls. The final run of the game came from the visitors in the ninth.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a meeting with HCU on Wednesday at 6 p.m. from Bobcat Ballpark to wrap up the 10-game homestand.
