SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State (4-5) won their third straight match after getting an early start winning the doubles point for the first time since their season opener, and picked up three singles wins over St. John's (6-5, 1-0 Big East) at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
This is the third 4-3 win for the Bobcats.
"I knew it was going to be a close match," said Texas State tennis head coach
Kendall Brooks. "We were really excited to get the doubles point today, it had been a long time coming, and obviously now we can see how important it was. I am really proud of how the girls competed today. St. John's was a very tough team that never gave up, and we had to get it done. Great to get another win as we head into conference play next week."
Doubles
Texas State ended their eight-match doubles point drought against St. John's to put give them the advantage going into singles.
Kate Malazonia and
Mae McCutcheon defeated Mouna Bouzgarrou and Lalita Devarakonda, the Big East Doubles Team of the Week, 6-2 on the top court.
In today's match
Sofia Fortuno and
Maria Lora made their doubles debut and made a statement by clinching the second doubles point of the season and ending the eight-match losing streak in doubles. Fortuno and Lora took down Willa Bay Breunich and Camila Ordonez 6-2 on court three.
St. John's Amaya Lopez and Yesica de Lucas won 6-3 on court two over
Jadeh Chan and
Andrea Pineda, their third doubles match loss.
Singles
Kiana Graham got the first singles win of the day with a straight 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lalita Devarakonda on the top court.
Kate Malazonia put the Bobcats up 3-0 with her 6-1, 7-5 win against Mouna Bouzgarrou on line three. Graham and Malazonia are both on a three-match win streak.
St. John's responded with three singles wins of their own, and what would be their only points of the match. Yesica de Lucas struck first on court two defeating
Emily Niers 7-5, 6-3. On court five,
Mae McCutcheon lost 6-3, 7-5 to Willa Bay Breunich.
Andrea Pineda battled through a back-and-forth set which included winning the tie-break set in the second set, but came up short to Amaya Lopez in a 6-1, 6-7 (7-3), 6-4 loss.
Sofia Fortuno clinched the match for the Bobcats with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win on line six to improve to a four-match win streak and a 5-1 singles record.
