Bobcats Put Scare Into #16/18 Longhorns

AUSTIN, Texas – Despite the final margin, Texas State (3-5) put a scare into No. 16/18 ranked Texas (6-1) Thursday night in the Moody Center. The Bobcats used a dominating run to open the second half to take a four-point advantage but eventually fell 77-58.

Dylan Dawson matched his career-high with 15 points on a 4-for-9 shooting night with two made three-pointers and going 5-for-6 at the free throw line. Making his first start of the season, Jordan Mason netted 10 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out a team-high two assists.

For the ninth consecutive game, Brandon Love recorded multiple blocks with two to increase his season total to 25. The junior forward also scored 14 points, retrieved five rebounds and tied his career-high with three steals.

Johsua O'Garro and Elijah Tate contributed eight and seven points, respectively, coming off the bench.

The Bobcats fell behind early as the Longhorns jumped out to a 25-4 lead after the first eight minutes with the only buckets coming from Love and Christian Turner.

Coming out of a timeout, TXST went on a 14-0 run to cut the deficit to seven. During the scoring stretch, Elijah Tate scored five straight points and O'Garro added four.

Dawson knocked down a three-pointer with 2:19 left in the opening half to get the Bobcats to within 30-24. UT ended up scoring six of the final eight points of the period to take a 36-26 advantage into halftime.

Head coach Terrence Johnson's halftime talk sparked Texas State coming out for the second half. The Bobcats outscored the Longhorns 16-2 over the first 4:23 with nine of the points coming courtesy of Love. Dawson hit a trey from the left wing with 16:25 on the clock to give TXST its first lead of the contest at 40-38.

Texas State would hold the lead until the 11:26 mark when Max Abmas hit a jumper to put the Longhorns back ahead. It would be short-lived as Dawson knocked down a jumper of his own to make it 50-49 in favor of the Bobcats.

A 13-0 run from UT would follow over the next 2:09 to make it a 12-point advantage for the hosts. Mason ended the scoring drought with a pull-up jumper on the first possession after a timeout. After trading a couple of baskets, the Longhorns would eventually pull away to claim the victory.
