SAN MARCOS, Texas – Playing its first game in 11 days, the Texas State men's basketball team had some rust to knock off Monday night. The Bobcats (4-5) dominated the second half to claim a 107-58 victory over Jarvis Christian in Strahan Arena.
Â
It is the first time TXST has cracked triple-digits in a game since putting up 101 on Dec. 12, 2021 against Southwestern. Overall, it was the 61st time in program history that the Bobcats scored at least 100 points. The second half saw them net 71 points to come two points shy of tying the program record for points in a half that was set against Our Lady of the Lake on Nov. 24, 2010.
Â
All nine Texas State players that saw action scored at least eight points with seven reaching double-figures. Leading the way was
Jordan Mason with 20 points, his second such contest this season. The sophomore was 5-for-10 from the field and made 9-of-10 free throws attempts while adding six rebounds and setting career highs of six assists and four steals.
Â
Chris Nix came off the bench and nearly recorded a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Also reaching double-figures coming off the bench was
Elijah Tate and
Dontae Horne with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Â
Totaling 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals was
Joshua O'Garro. Knocking down three shots from beyond the arc was
Dylan Dawson, who netted 13 points.
Brandon Love made 4-of-8 shot attempts to finish with 12 points. The junior forward also had five rebounds, two steals and one block to see his multiple block streak end at nine games.
Â
Christian Turner finished the night with eight points, six rebounds and a career best six assists. Finishing with nine points, seven rebounds and five assists was
Kaden Gumbs.
Â
As a team, the Bobcats were 36-for-68 (52.9%) from the field with eight made three-pointers and converted 27-of-34 (79.4%) free throw attempts. They finished with a 44-30 advantage on the boards, dished out 26 assists and forced 24 turnovers with 15 being the result of a steal.
Â
The first two minutes of the game saw Texas State knocked down their first three shot attempts. The rust would show as the Bobcats made just two of their next 16 shots over the next 10 minutes. Solid defense and knocking down all six free throw attempts saw them lead 16-9.
Â
TXST twice made three-pointers on back-to-back possessions with the second time extending the lead to 36-18 when Gumbs hit his only attempt from beyond the arc with 2:10 left in the first half. The Bulldogs would score the final six points of the period to make it a 12-point contest.
Â
Over the first nine minutes of the second half, the Bobcats went on a 40-8 run to put the game out of reach. Tate made a layup with 3:14 left on the clock to put Texas State into the triple-digits and give the team a 51-point advantage.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a trip to take on former Southland Conference foe Sam Houston on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
