SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Sam Houston Bearkats came into Strahan Arena came away with a narrow 66-62 win after turnovers plagued the Bobcats Tuesday night.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Coming into the game, both teams were prepared for a close game. With a split record of wins and losses between these two programs and a equal balanced history, it was going to be close the entire way through and that's what ended up happening. To open the first quarter, the Bearkats were able to find an edge. Capitalizing off Bobcat turnovers, the Bearkats 10 points off turnovers were enough for them to take a 16-12 edge in the first quarter.
Through the second quarter the Bobcats were able to keep things close still, but didn't find a way to take the lead. Despite going 2-3 from three, the Bearkats still outshot Texas State from the field and were able to extend their lead to 31-24 going into half time.
Tiffany Tullis came alive in the third quarter for the Bobcats. Going for nine points and three rebounds in the third quarter alone, her performance was enough for the Bobcats to take the lead headed to the final quarter. The Bobcats also went 6-6 from the free throw line in the third quarter, which while holding the Bearkats to know free throws, was a big part in the 42-41 lead for the Bobcats.
Both sides offenses came alive in the final quarter. With a combined 45 points scored between the two sides, there was a lot of buckets falling. The Bobcats shot 43.8% in the fourth quarter with three made three-point attempts for their 20 points in the final quarter. After being narrowly outscored, though, the Bearkats were able to come back and win the game 66-62.
WHAT HEAD COACH ZENARAE ANTOINE SAID:Â "First I want to give a lot of credit to Sam Houston. They changed over their roster similar to us, they have some young women who came in and played really physical. They played really physical last year as well. We had opportunity to watch them play this current season. They came in aggressive, and it knocked us back. We got out bearings together, and battled, and we just ran out of time."
