SAN MARCOS, Texas – A seven-match unbeaten streak to start the season came to an end for the Texas State soccer team (6-1-1) on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 setback to No. 16 TCU (5-2-1) at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The streak was the longest in program history to begin a campaign.
Â
"TCU is one of the top teams in the country and no shame in that loss. I thought we played really well and it was 0-0 at the half. Unfortunately, we had a handball to give them a penalty kick to start out the second half," said head coach
Steve Holeman. "Our girls played with tremendous effort and heart. We had three or four great opportunities but just weren't able to convert."
Â
The Bobcats held the Horned Frogs scoreless in the first half with only five shot attempts and just one on frame. TXST had three great looks but all were slightly off target. The first came just over three minutes into the contest when
Chloe Jones sent the ball just wide of the left post.
Â
During the 21 minute,
Zoe Junior intercepted a pass in TCU's defensive half and was able to get into the box for a shot attempt. The ball sailed slight past the wrongs side of the left post. Nearly two minutes later off a corner kick,
Olivia Wright headed the ball off the left woodwork.
Â
The second half began with a fantastic opportunity for TXST when
Westyn Henderson sent a short cross into the box to
Bailey Peschel. The senior forward was able to flick it to the front of the six-yard box but the Frog goalkeeper was able to beat Junior to the ball.
Â
Early in the 48th minute, the Bobcats were called for a handball in the 18-yard box to award the visitors a penalty kick. Tyler Isgrig knocked it into the bottom right corner to give TCU a 1-0 advantage. The Frogs doubled their advantage just over two minutes later when Messiah Bright knocked in a corner kick from Isgrig that was deflected to her off the head of Olivia Hasler.
Â
Some quick passes eventually saw Jones send the ball just past a TCU defender to
Madi Goss in the 18-yard box. Goss' shot saw the goalie come out to close the distance and make a diving stop with her legs early in the 52nd minute.
Â
Mya Ulloa appeared to earn a penalty kick with 15 minutes left to go in the match as a shot attempt was blocked by a TCU defender just inside the penalty area when she threw her arm up to avoid getting hit in the face. The ball deflected off her forearm but no whistled was called. A follow-up shot by Ulloa deflected off another visiting player and out of bounds for a corner kick.
Â
The Horned Frogs concluded the scoring late in the 83rd minute when Isgrig put home a shot from the top of the penalty box off a pass from Oli Pena.
Â
Pacing the Bobcats with two shots apiece were Ulloa and Wright. Goss' lone attempt was the only shot that was placed on frame.
Â
Next up for Texas State is the start of Sun Belt Conference play. The Bobcats host Arkansas State on Saturday, Sept. 17 with kickoff scheduled for 12 p.m.
