Softball caps weekend with pair of wins at Wildcat Invitational

Texas State knocks off Boise State, Iowa State on Sunday after dropping to No. 9 Arizona Saturday night

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Texas State softball program followed its one-run heartbreaking loss to No. 9 Arizona, 11-10, Saturday night with a pair of quality wins over Boise State, 6-2, and Iowa State, 4-3, Sunday afternoon.

Arizona (14-4) broke Texas State's hearts Saturday night with a game-ending, run-scoring single from Carlie Scupin in the bottom of the seventh to finish off a wild back-and-forth affair that saw five lead changes and the Bobcats scoring at least one run in innings two through seven.

Five different Bobcats were credited with multiple hits against the ninth-ranked Wildcats. Additionally, six different Texas State softball student-athletes finished with at least one RBI, including Samara Lagway who drove in a game-high four runs with three coming on a second-inning home run.

The offensive momentum for Texas State carried over Sunday, when the Bobcat struck for a pair of two three-run innings against Boise State (16-4). Claire Ginder sparked the first three-run inning when she singled home Cat Crenek and Sara Vanderford in the game's opening frame. Dani Elder kept the inning alive when she drew a bases-loaded walk to score Anna Jones

Following single-run innings from the Broncos in the second and fifth innings, the Bobcat offense, again, picked up as Lagway clubbed a solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth inning. Crenek and Vanderford extended the lead with run-scoring singles after the lineup rolled over.

Freshman pitcher Presley Glende (W, 2-1) picked up the win with two scoreless relief innings. Jessica Mullins (S, 1) entered the pitching circle in the top of the sixth and went on to recorded three strikeouts and allowed only one baserunner to earn the save.

Mullins (W, 6-5) trotted back out to the circle less than an hour later and proceeded to toss a complete game as the Bobcats knocked off Iowa State (11-7) to cap a five-game-in-three-day stretch for Texas State.

The combination of Jones and Ginder struck, again, at the dish when the first-year duo produced two first-inning runs with a double — to score Vanderford — and a single — to score Jones — respectively.

The following inning, Vanderford did what she does so well and drove in a pair of base runners with a single to extend the Bobcat lead to four runs. The Cyclones attempted to storm back with a pair of runs in the third followed by a single run in the fifth.

But Mullins kept the Iowa State offense out of the run columns throughout the final game's final two frames to preserve Texas State's one-run victory.

UP NEXT

Texas State (11-6) will look to claim its sixth win over its last seven games when the Bobcats travel to College Station on Wednesday, March 9 for an evening showdown with Texas A&M at 6 p.m. CT.
