Aggies come from behind to knock off Bobcats

COLLEGE STATION, TX — Through the first four innings of Texas State's 4-1 loss at Texas A&M Wednesday night, the game screamed similarities from the Bobcats' last trip to Davis Diamond in 2020.

Texas State (11-7) took an early one-run lead in the top of the second — exactly like two years ago — when former Aggie, now Bobcat Dani Elder doubled home Anna Jones from second with two outs in the inning. Caitlyn Rogers tried to make it 2-0, Bobcats, but was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first base on the play.

Then, just like 2020, Texas A&M (15-5) responded with a two spot in the bottom of the third when a throw from Claire Ginder went into the outfield to allow both Shaylee Ackerman, who led off the inning with a single, and Koko Wooley, who hit the softball towards Ginder, to score.

Texas State looked in prime position to tie the game in the top half of the fourth after Anna Jones reached first base on a one-out walk. She moved to second on an infield groundout, then ultimately to third on an infield single off the bat of Ginder. But, both Jones and Ginder were left at the corners to end the inning.

A one-out throwing error the following inning extended the Aggie lead to 3-1.

Cat Crenek started the top of the sixth by drawing a full-count walk, but was eventually erased at second base on a one-out fielder's choice off the bat of Jones. Jones was ultimately stranded at first to end the inning when Rogers went down swinging.

Texas A&M added a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-out home run from Mayce Allen. And the lone action in the top of the seventh for the Bobcats was a full-count, two-out walk from Elder.

With her performance in the pitching circle against Texas A&M, Wednesday night marked the 12th pitching appearance for Jessica Mullins (6-5) allowing two-or-fewer earned runs after tossing six innings of two-earned run softball on the evening.
