Cold Weather No Issue for Bobcats Against Shockers

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Playing a rescheduled game in unseasonable cold weather that visiting Wichita State (0-5) is more used to this time of year, Texas State (4-1) came away with a 9-2 victory Thursday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.

Trevis Sundgren (1-0) threw five shutout innings of two-hit ball with two strikeouts to pick up the win. Suffering the loss was Robert Cranz (0-1) as he allowed four runs on five hits in four innings.

Tossing two scoreless innings of relief with a strikeout was Carson Keithley. Also working two frames of relief was Victor Loa, who also struck out two batters.

Junior Ben McClain had a big day at the plate as he drove in four runs while hitting a home run and double. Cameron Gibbons went 3-for-4 with three runs and two doubles. Plating two runs on the evening was Dalton Shuffield.

August Ramirez got the scoring started in the second when he hit a high shot to right field that cleared the wall for his second homer of the season. Gibbons immediately followed with a double and came around to score to put the Bobcats up 2-0 when McClain hit a deep fly ball to center that was misjudged by the centerfielder and hit the ground.

Gibbons led off the fifth with a double to left field. McClain turned on a 3-2 pitch to send it over the right field wall for his first homer of the season and increase TXST's advantage to 4-0.

The sixth began with a single by Justin Thompson and was followed by a Ramirez walk and a bunt single from Gibbons. A 2-1 pitch to McClain was laced down the left field line to plate two runs. Following a walk drawn by John Wuthrich to reload the bases, Shuffield hit a two RBI single through the right side. Jose Gonzalez capped off the five-run frame with an RBI double to right center.

The final runs of the game came from the Shockers when Brock Rodden hit a two-run home run in the eighth.

Next up for the Bobcats is a three-game series against Ohio State at Bobcat Ballpark. The series opener on Friday will see first pitch at 3 p.m.
