Texas State to start ‘Graduate Week’ against Arkansas State

SAN MARCOS, TX — Still looking to find its position for the Sun Belt Conference Championship, the Texas State women's basketball program will open a two-game home slate against Arkansas State on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. CT.

The contest will mark the first of the final two regular-season basketball games for the Bobcats with next week's conference championship tournament looming.

Brant Freeman (play by play) and Suzanne Fox (analyst) will call the game's action on ESPN+.

LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS

With her 164 assists so far during the 2021-22 season, Texas State senior guard Kennedy Taylor is third on the program's single-season assist list. Taylor enters the final week of the regular season just seven assists from passing her 2019-20 total for second place. Taylor needs 50 more assists this season to break Taeler Deer's single-season program mark of 213 assists set during the 2017-18 season.

Entering this week's games, Texas State senior forward Da'Nasia Hood needs 48 points to pass Taeler Deer (2014-18) for 10th on the Texas State women's basketball career scoring list.

With three more steals, Texas State senior guard Kennedy Taylor will pass Yolunda Oatis (1991-93) for fifth on the program's all-time career steals list. With five more, Taylor will pass Taeler Deer (2014-18) for fourth and 15 more would put Taylor in third palce after passing Erin Peoples (2012-17).

With at least three games of the 2021-22 season left, Texas State senior guard Kennedy Taylor needs 43 more assists to break the program's all-time career assist mark of 595 set by Shelly Borton (1986-90).

SCOUTING THE RED WOLVES

Over the last 15 games, Arkansas State's Jireh Washington has been averaging 14.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists, while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 35.8 percent from behind the 3-point arc. In six games period, Washington was averaging 8.3 points and 1.3 rebounds. Over the last nine games, the Memphis native has scored in double figures in seven of those games.

Since Arkansas State's first season in the Sun Belt (1991-92), the Red Wolves have accumulated a 131-99 (.570) record throughout the month of February. Since going 8-0 in 2015-16, the Red Wolves have owned just one record of .500-or-better in the month over the last five seasons dating back to 2016-17.

SERIES HISTORY

Thursday's contest between Texas State and Arkansas State will mark the first matchup between the two programs in San Marcos since Jan. 4, 2020, a span of 782 days. The Red Wolves' scheduled trip to San Marcos during the 2020-21 season was canceled due to winter weather throughout the state of Texas.

A win over Arkansas State would mark the first win in San Marcos over the Red Wolves for Texas State since Feb. 14, 2019, when the Bobcats won 68-54 behind a game-high 21 points from Brooke Holle.

Arkansas State leads the overall series, 10-6, and have won four of the six all-time meetings against the Bobcats in San Marcos.
