SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State football added two new defensive coaches to its staff on Tuesday as Matthew Gregg was named the cornerbacks coach and Dexter McCoil, Sr. the safeties coach, head coach
G.J. Kinne announced.

Both Gregg and McCoil, Sr. arrive at Texas State after helping Kinne and Incarnate Word win a Southland Conference championship and make the program's first ever appearance in the FCS Playoff semifinals in 2022.

"Matthew and Dexter are great young coaches that we are excited to bring to Texas State," said Kinne. "Coach Gregg is an unbelievable coach and recruiter with experience at the high school, junior college and Division I levels, all in the state of Texas. Coach McCoil is a great role model and coach for our student-athletes and another rising star in the profession after nine years of professional playing experience."

Gregg was with UIW since 2019 and served as the outside linebackers coach. He helped lift the Cardinals to two conference championships.

Prior to UIW, Gregg was the linebackers coach, recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator at Kilgore College in 2018. He helped the Rangers win a conference championship and tutored several players who went on to play at the NCAA level, including current Bobcat
Brian Holloway.

Gregg was a high school coach in Texas and Oklahoma for three years before making the jump to the junior college level. He started out at Bethany High School in Bethany, Oklahoma in 2015 before coaching at Van Vleck High School (TX) in 2016 and Fort Bend Hightower High School (TX) in 2017. At each stop he was the linebackers coach while he was also the special teams coordinator at Fort Bend Hightower and Van Vleck.

From Houston, Texas, Gregg played collegiately at Southern Nazarene and Kilgore College. The All-American linebacker was also a team captain while at Southern Nazarene.

McCoil, Sr. spent one season at UIW as the safeties coach and NFL/CFL liaison. He tutored Kaleb Culp to all-conference honors this season after Culp was second on the team in tackles while also forcing two fumbles.

With high-level playing experience in college and in the pros, McCoil, Sr. began his coaching career at the high school level in his home state of Louisiana. He started out as the defensive backs coach at his alma mater, Lutcher High School in Louisiana, in 2018. In 2020 and 2021, he was the defensive backs coach at East Ascension High School (LA) and helped three of the four starting cornerbacks earn all-district honors.

McCoil, Sr. played professional football for nine years, including three years in the NFL and four years in the CFL. In 2014, he was named the CFL Rookie of the Year and helped the Edmonton Eskimos win the 2015 Grey Cup. In the NFL, he played for the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers.

His professional playing career followed an award-ridden career at Tulsa, where he was teammates with Kinne and set the program and Conference USA career interception record. He was a C-USA Second Team honoree, Freshman All-America Honorable Mention selection, and the 2011 Armed Forces Bowl Defensive MVP.

At Lutcher High School as a student, McCoil, Sr. helped the school win two state championships.

Gregg and McCoil, Sr. are the second and third defensive coaches named by Kinne to the Texas State coaching staff.
Mike O'Guin was named the defensive line coach on Dec. 14.

Kinne was named the 21st head coach in Texas State football history on Dec. 2.
