An experienced coach and recruiter in the state of Texas, Mike O'Guin was named Texas State's defensive line coach on Wednesday as head coach
G.J. Kinne continued to fill out his coaching staff for the 2023 season.
Â
O'Guin arrives in San Marcos after coaching at Sam Houston in 2021 and 2022 and with previous coaching stops at Notre Dame, Texas Tech and North Shore High School in Houston.
Â
"I am pleased to welcome Coach O'Guin to San Marcos and thrilled for him to be a Bobcat," said Kinne. "Mike is a relentless recruiter and tremendous teacher, which stems from his background as a Texas high school football coach. Combine that with his Texas pedigree, O'Guin is a great addition to Texas State."
Â
At Sam Houston this year as the defensive line coach and defensive recruiting coordinator, O'Guin helped the Bearkat defense rank atop the Western Athletic Conference in total defense (37th in the country) and scoring defense as well as second in tackles for loss (15th in the country). Overall, the Bearkats were top-20 in the nation in scoring defense (16th), rushing defense (11th), first down defense (2nd) and tackles for loss (15th).
Â
O'Guin also helped tutor a pair of all-conference performers in defensive linemen Toby Ndukwe and Ellison Hubbard. An All-WAC First Team selection, Ndukwe was third on the team in tackles with 34 and fourth in the WAC in tackles for loss per game. Hubbard, who was All-WAC Second Team, had six quarterback hurries, four tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks in nine games.
Â
From Missouri City, Texas, O'Guin played collegiately at SMU before his career was ended due to injury. He stayed with the program as a student assistant coach for three years and earned dual degrees in history and applied psychology and sport management in 2014. He began his coaching career at John Tyler High School (2014-15) and Angleton High School (2015-17) before moving on to North Shore, where he was the defensive line coach.
Â
O'Guin coached current Bobcat
Jordan Revels at North Shore, including in Revels' senior year in 2018 when they won the Class 6A-Division I state title.
Â
In a year-plus at Texas Tech from 2019 to 2020, O'Guin was a graduate assistant working primarily with the defensive line. In 2020 with Notre Dame, he was a defensive line assistant and helped the Fighting Irish go 10-2. His first season at Sam Houston was in 2021 when the Bearkats went 11-1 and reached the FCS Playoff Quarterfinals.
Â
O'Guin is the third assistant coach named by newly-minted head coach Kinne and first on the defensive side.
Mack Leftwich and
Jordan Shoemaker were announced as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach/run game coordinator, respectively, on Dec. 13.
Â
Kinne was named the 21st head coach in Texas State football history on Dec. 2.
