JONESBORO, Ark. – Fifth year senior
Isiah Small finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season Saturday afternoon. However, Texas State fell 67-60 to Arkansas State in the First National Bank Arena.
Small made 7-of-12 shots on the afternoon with one made three-pointer and converted two free throws. Eight of his 10 boards came on the defensive end.
Â
With the loss, the Bobcats are now 12-5 on the season and 3-2 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Red Wolves improve to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Â
ASU knocked down first two shots of the game for a 5-2 lead. Texas State followed by holding the hosts to just one made field goal over their next seven attempts to go on a 12-3 run that spanned 6:43.
Â
A slow spot offensively saw the Red Wolves come back to take a 19-18 lead. After the teams traded baskets, an alley-oop slam by Small put TXST back in front by one and the team would hold it for nearly the rest of the half. The final five points of the period came from the Red Wolves to send the contest into halftime tied at 32.
Â
Small hit a short jumper for the first bucket of the second half that put him in double-figures. It would be the last points for the Bobcats until
Caleb Asberry knocked down a free throw at the 15:53 mark while ASU scored 12 straight points in that span.
Â
The Bobcats were able to get within 52-49 after NIghael Ceaser and Small combined to score seven straight points. The Red Wolves responded with seven consecutive points of their own to go back up by double-digits.
Â
Mason Harrell went on a personal 6-0 run over a 72 second span to get Texas State with four. That would be as close as the Bobcats would get over the final 1:19 of the game.
Â
Only other player to reach double-figures was Ceaser as he finished with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and made his lone free throw attempt. Both
Shelby Adams and Harrell finished with two steals apiece.
Â
Next up for TXST is rivalry week with UT Arlington with two games against each other. First up is a trip to the Dallas-Forth Worth area for a 7 p.m. tip on Thursday from the College Park Center.
